It's my first time on here and it's getting colder here in Darbydale,Ohio . I'm in need of some good, hot burning wood , for little or no cash and fast. Anyone?? :chop:

Welcome to the site @angelLemaster ! As @Cheesecutter indicated there isn't going to be much free wood around here as the average member is either a wood scrounger or a wood seller. Please excuse any smart alect answers you may receive as well intentioned banter.

Occasionally there will be free wood around here but fairly rare.

Please ask any questions you have about anything related to firewood, someone in here will have an answer for you.

Now that I reread my short response( I'm usually long winded) I realize I started off wrong.
I actually did deliver a free load of wood. My son's friend is a lot short on cash and didn't arrange for any firewood. When he had 1 weeks worth left he called my brother in law who delivers slabwood for an amish sawmill that he wanted a load. Of course this time of year everybody wants a load of wood yesterday. Money talks and BS walks so he never got a load of wood. So my son asks me if I will sell him some wood, of course I say no problem, next is the short of cash thing. Again I say no problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, just tell him to remember next summer when he has some free time he will be at my house stacking wood into my bins for me. And we can work out a deal on "free" firewood for help in the bush or on the splitter. Nothing in life is free.
AngelLemaster, this is not a good time of year to be looking for free wood. I would suggest if you have no cash then you will need to trade for wood. Nothing wrong with bartering and I bet lots of us on here do it. What do you do for a living? Is it something that you could offer?
I'm a carpenter and I have made deals with people in exchange for work done on their house or whatever.
And don't be too picky maybe you can get green wood for real cheap right now and keep it for use next year.
Hit the lumber yards and factories and get any free scrap wood pallets that might be laying around.
Construction job sites, but make sure you ask 1st. For years I burnt wood cutoffs from where I work.
Try Craigslist, but be prepared for green wood.
Factory building sites or anywhere that they are using roofing or wall steel. The steel comes on 4x4 wooden bunks that make good firewood.
Give us abit of history and maybe we can help you out more.

you can have everything i burnt last year.

but seriously i would give away firewood trees free if the person would come cut them down and take the away.

probably not the oak, or at least the trunks i plan to mill. but the poplar, ash and maple for sure.

and they better not hurt my softwoods i am saving for the mill.

Call your local tree services and let them know they can dump at your address. You might get a bunch of soft wood with some hard wood mixed from time to time. Tree services have to pay to dump chunk wood so if your not picky you might get a couple of good loads. Pine makes good heat when your cold.

I guess by now you see the error of your ways. Quality wood, in January, for free? Maybe at the point of a gun.

It takes time to make firewood good, at least a full summer after being c/s/s. Takes some work too, cutting & splitting. When someone has dealt with the necessaries, it's not likely you'll see it given away. You'd best learn how to scrounge, and use a moisture-meter, just like the rest of us. Good idea to keep a 30-40 cc saw in the car/truck for roadside scrounges, like many here have done and continue to do.

Just don't wait until you feel the cold. Do it in spring or early summer, or let it take the air for the next winter. Plan Ahead. :D

EDITED to remove my half arsed opinion....

Maybe try asking around to folks at your church. Food shelters sometimes have "needs wood" lists as well. You might get lucky there. Craigslist is a good tool, but you'll likely not find any freebies in the middle of winter. Your best bet will probably be one of the local community support organizations in your area.

Stay warm

Thank you all for your comments and advice, I will be sure to keep it all in remembrance.
I didn't however wait until the cold set in . I had aquired a good bit of firewood in the summer time that would have lasted us another month had I not tried to help a friend out . Then there were people who decided to "borrow" some of it.
I have been looking online, talking to people I know, and calling around trying to replace what is gone but money is low and not so easy to come by at this time.
Cantoo, in answer to your reply, I am a single mom...not by choice...who has been trying to find work for some time now so that I may continue to provide for my family.
Thank you all again for your comments and time.

The scrounge thread has several good hints.

Call your local churches
check Craigslist
Call local tree service
Ask neighbors who burn

I know if somebody like yourself in my area contacted my church they'd probably have so much wood brought out they wouldn't know what to do . We are always eager to help the widow or the orphan in need

angelLemaster,
Sorry about your plight (and for my initial reponse). I have given away many a load of firewood to people in similar straights. As others have suggested, check with local charities, I know we have some here that provid free wood through their network.
Best wishes,
sq1
