Here you go from the Columbus, Ohio craigslist. If you're willing to work, you'll never have to be short of wood again. Have fun!

Kevin Masters Arborist Services, a Columbus based tree service, is looking for a new person or possibly a few to pick up wood from curbs or yards throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for the right person to get a lot of decent hardwood at no cost beyond picking it up. However, our criteria for a new woodhead is extensive. There are plenty, and I mean lots and lots, of folks who want free wood. We are only looking to work with the right person.
We need someone who:
Can generally pick up on weekdays within 24 hours at most after being texted that wood is ready. If it always has to wait until the weekend, etc, it won't work.
Can receive text messages, responds quickly, is not hard to get a hold of.
Has a trailer to haul larger loads. Generally, we'll be offering a whole tree, maybe more than one. It may sometimes even require more than one full load of a truck and trailer. There's no partial pickup, it's all or nothing.
Has a decent chainsaw. Sometimes it may be necessary to cut wood smaller, though we try to have it prepared for pickup in reasonable sizes(though some trees are large enough that even an 18" long piece may be 40" wide.
Has a leaf blower and a rake. We try to have everything cleaned up, however sometimes there is bark or sticks that may be under the stacked wood pile and we'll need to have that little bit cleaned up. There is no exception for this, one complaint from a customer that there was a bit of debris under a curb wood pile and we'll move on to the next interested woodhead.
Preference will be given to any woodhead that has a tractor or bobcat, or similar means to move really big wood. The less we have to cut it up, or go back with a grapple truck to get wood because it was too big, the better. That said, that woodhead will have to be careful to not leave torn up turf on our jobsites.
Need someone who is prepared to load the wood on their own or with their own help. We don't need anyone who is looking to be loaded up, we are not offering that. There's plenty of folks who are just happy to have wood. In the event that we have you pick up while we're still on site, the pick up person will take direction and stay out of the work zone as directed.
Has a good attitude in general, respectful, etc. We've had a guy previously who got into an argument with a homeowner about something small and told the homeowner off. This is not even a little worth it for us to deal with. We have a good reputation, and are not open to tarnishing it even a tiny bit to work with anyone who behaves any less that politely when they might encounter our clients.
All that said, we work all year round, and sometimes have several big removals a week. It's understandable if someone can't get every load, which is why there may be room for more than one woodhead. We have a few good guys already, but no one with a mechanized wood mover of any sort. We need people who are equipped to pick up BIG wood. If interested, please email a brief description of how you fit into the criteria above. Please take the time to write 2 or 3 sentences about yourself also, otherwise, its probably not going to work (IE: "hey, do u still nd some1 2 pickup wood? Im ur guy, thx, txt me" is not going to get a response). All the above may sound picky and strict, but we've wasted our time with enough goofballs that weren't ready to deal with the amount of wood we're offering or couldn't conduct themselves like civilized adults. Looking forward to hearing from some good candidates.

Classic! I'd like to meet this guy! Really surprised they want to deal with anyone at their jobsite though.

smooookeeees!! to have that in this area!!!!!

Suggestions to look for scrounge wood on Craigslist are good however she did mention she is a single mom so it's likely she doesnt have the time or equipment to be running around for curbside wood.

Does anyone in her area know a reputable firewood seller?

Yeah it's a goldmine for the arborist if her can suck someone into coming in with their own equipment to clean up his mess.
I think if both parties hold up their end of the bargain it would be a win-win. Although if the arborist is charging for removal and the guy getting the wood is doing it for free then there could be some problems.

Everyone that I have heard from in Ohio says EAB is everywhere, therefore prices of wood should be way down. Plus ash dries really fast so it's not like getting stuck with green oak that was advertised/sold as seasoned and is worthless for a year or two.

Sounded like the arborist was cleaning up everything except what's under the pile of cut wood. Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Done it when my neighbors had a couple maples taken out. Tree co put all the small stuff in the shredder, cut the rest into 16" pieces & piled them up. All I had to do was load the rounds on trailer & rake a little when pile was gone.

Angel, time to put some more thought into it. Does any of your friends husbands do firewood? I'm sure the wife would be willing to trade firewood for babysitting, house cleaning, painting, run errands or anything else that you are capable of. Maybe your kids are old enough to help you. I give away wood once in awhile but I always try to attach a string to it so that it's not a one way street, in my mind at least. I love doing firewood but I also know that it is hard work and giving away wood for free is not something I want to do over and over to the same person.
3 years ago a friend of my daughters asked if they could borrow a chainsaw ( shes 20 and her mother has 6 kids, husband fell over dead of a heart attack at around 40) I said no problem. I then asked of they could run the saw, nope but they would figure it out. Hmm, my saw and someone who has no idea, not going to happen. So I dropped everything I was doing, loaded 2 saws onto my tractor, hooked onto my splitter and drove over there. Spent about 3 hours there and got the whole pile (donated by a neighbour cleaning fencelines) cut into rounds, split and the kids piled it in the wood shed. Every kid worked their azz off even the 2 little ones. I was happy to help and have done numerous small jobs for them since. All I got out of the deal was a can of grape pop and I think it was a fair trade. Now if they had of sat there and watched me work I would have cut it into rounds and drove away.

For future reference, if you need to heat with wood, January 13 is a bad time to beg for free processed ready to burn firewood. Especially from a newly registered stranger. Single mom or otherwise. I have trouble believing a mother could be so irresponsible as to wait until Jaunuary 13 to look for fuel to warm her children. In the future you should start hoarding firewood year round with a 2 year supply. It will be much easier to find free firewood in July than in January. Your request and your post are ridiculous. You need to start looking into the future and planning ahead.

Good luck. This is my second incarnation of this post and I am being so polite it's making my head hurt.

you can have everything i burnt last year.

but seriously i would give away firewood trees free if the person would come cut them down and take the away.

probably not the oak, or at least the trunks i plan to mill. but the poplar, ash and maple for sure.

and they better not hurt my softwoods i am saving for the mill.
Where abouts are you? If you're anywhere close by, I'll come cut every maple and ash you got!

Too much effort. Couldn't he buck and split this wood and deliver it to her home?
