I am enjoying the different opinions here... I must say I left out some information that I now realize I left out... This task is hobby based and not "work for profit" Like many tree/woodworking enthusiasts, I just enjoy the machine meeting the challenge. It seems like an interesting challenge to build a guide or jig or whatever you want to call it and do it myself. I guess its that thing inside some of us to build somekind of mousetrap whether its better or not.
The only time constraints are based on the resistance to rot and the condition of my less that reliable body parts. I'm happy to say the logs are on farm wagons and seem safe for the time being. In short, looks like fun.
Thanks again to all, woojr...

Get as big a saw as you can. A medium sized saw will cut it, but will be very slow going. An older heavier saw in a larger displacement is perfect for milling. you don't notice the weight as much when milling as when felling and bucking, as the saw is supported by the log.

I purchased a 385XP to use on a mill, already had a beam cutter. I put the saw on the beam cutter and it worked, but I couldn't for see putting it on a mill as I needed lumber for farm sheds and a house in short order so I bought a band mill. The Husky 385XP has more than enough power for the beam cutter and it is suggested for the mill I was going to purchase. It is one of my felling saws now. ;)
