So my question is does anyone have a used saddle and hard ware that is in good shape got a baby due any day so cant really spend a lot for new but cant get junk and get hurt. If anyone has ideas or help please let me know.

A saddle is the big thing the rope I will buy new D-rings if there in good shape to get started and the saddle I believe is a med its been a while since I used my them last but pretty sure that would work and the price ide spend is up in the air just gotta be careful what I spend

Any company that makes an entry level employee buy his own gear is not worth the effort to fill out the app.

maybe a call to OSHA, isn't there a SHALL Provide PPE statement in the general rules?

Hey John, are you saying climbing gear,(saddle, spikes, etc) is PPE? Nah, you can't be. Even gloves are not PPE that an employer must provide. That said, When we hire a climber, he leaves his personal gear home. We buy him a saddle, climb lines, a new 200T, etc,,,
Jeff :)

Thanks John thats kinda what i was thinking but like i said im new so wasnt sure glad to hear that and i plan on doing some more looking around

Any company I have worked for will let you use a set of spare climbing gear to start out. If you're good they will buy you new. I always preferred to use my own climbing gear (once I acquired it) and so have all of the other experienced climbers I have worked with.

I keep an extra saddle, rope and gaffs for any new prospects that come along. I also like to have the extra gear in case a rescue situation should arise.

Check your local pawn shops. It's not often that you will find climbing gear there as most climbers tend to hang on to the stuff that wins their bread but sometimes you will find some decent stuff there. If you find gear there it will usually run you about a third of the regular price. I found a set of like new aluminum Bashlin gaffs in the pawn shop for $75. With the pads and straps, they would have gone for over $400 new. Break out your yellow page book and start calling ahead that way you don't waste a trip.

I would recommend getting a new climb line and lanyard though.

Damb Jefflovestorm!!! I want to come work for you... I have been with this company around two years and still get hand me downs. I have been contimplating bringing my own equipment in just for my own safty. My hat is off to you and the company for being safe and provoding your crews with new stuff. good job, And iam not being sarcastic. I think its great.

I think a extra set is a must in serious tree co - we ourselves don't have second set, but i'we been pushing my boss hard on that topic - I dont want to be left dangling up somewhere while the rescue is en route. I think this business is dangerous enough to spend some money on safety
BTW -you are right about ropes - you never know what is been done to somebody else's ropes - seen coupla' of people rigging out huge logs with their climbing line - thats a nono for me!

If a guy uses his own gear that may have a defect, it is the companies problem if he gets hurt. We are a TCIA Accredtted business so we really stay on top of safety.
Jeff ;)

Jeff, I am at the point now that I would rather use my own equipment because The equipment the company is giving out is any thing but new. I have a used saddle, spikes, Climb line, you name it. We resived a new climb line from the G.F. and the rope ended up being about 50 feet long. Way to go! My personal equipment I know the history of it. When you get hand me downs It is a differant story. Then threw in a power line and just hang out over the top of it!
