What kinds of items have you guys lost on job sites? I don't mean things which have gone through the chipper. I am talking about stuff which you know you brought to the jobsite, and when you left, it didn't go with you. I remember one job, I lost a lense to my glasses. Had to drive around for the weekend with only one lense. Talk about a headache :(

I always pack up my own gear. And check it back to the truck. Has gotten easy, only lost a pair of cloves once.

Work alone most of the time, that might be the reason. When I've worked with others there were times I had to go back to get something.

on a slightly different note, how many people have had stuff stolen from the work site.
once had a 254 nicked when i was working barely 20 yards from the truck. someone pulled up, jumped out and had it away when my back was turned.
nerve of some people

My innocence, my belief in my fellow man, my enthusiasm, my motivation, etc.

I lost my butt on a job once, but that was due more to low bidding my work, than just leaving it on the job.

As for physical items, everything from a ball point pen to a 8ft. ladder.

I am curious what someone would use an eight foot ladder for. Too short to get on the roof safely and if the first limb was less than 8’ you would just pull yourself up.

I haven't told you how short I am

Needed it to get into a 4WD pickup. :D

Was actually using it to replace some gutter that had been damaged by a falling limb. Got sidetracked, and since it was on the back of the house, forgot it till I was about 1/2 way home.

I suspect 'good neighbor' picked it up for safe keeping.

Just got my 1st 8 foot orchard ladder. Great for setting up under fruit tree canopies. So we did an apple the other day, and guess where the ladder was...at home....had to use the 12 footer.

I have a hard time forming a mental image of you working on “small” trees Roger. :)

I lost a friction saver I had just made with a pulley and karabiner. I forgot to clip it on my saddle after retrieving it. I figured someone picked it up because when I went back for it it was gone.

Have a terrible habit of leaving my ear suppressors hanging on fences, railings etc. Usually get a few houses away and go back. It does seem funny that when I am by myself I usually get all my gear together since I took it all out, but when I am with a crew something gets left usually a rake, gas can, saw wrench. Never actually lost anything but had to make a few trips back. I actually left one job and forgot to get paid, guy called me on the way home and wondered if I wanted the check mailed. :)

I had a couple other things come to mind.

I was doing an ash tree removal a couple years ago. Went down there with a blue rope, came back and no blue rope found. The person I went down there with wouldn't have taken it. I think the client may have taken it.

The best one I can remember though was when I had to cut apart some roots, so I bought a grafting knife for $40. Brought it to the job, I used it for a little while and then handed it over to my employees for them to use. Last time I ever saw it. Didn't even last half a day  They told me they had left it on the rock wall up front, went back IMMEDIATELY after I dropped them at thier car. Nothing to be found.

lynce pin

we lost a lynce (spelling) pin from one of the linkage arms on the Mog a few weeks ago.....as you assume that they stay there we dont check them, went for lunch and some c**t nicked it, first we knew was when we lifted the chipper and one side dropped......
grrrrr

ive heard of neds (the scottish exec calls them under privalidged council estate youths....very PC, neds to the rest of the population) breaking into vans and grabbing a bag......if you dont know what a lockjack is it gets chucked.......so they dont even make any money on that 'crap' (but expensive) item

I lost a good climbing rope years ago, coiled it up and just forgot it, went back for it the owner said " the dog might have drug it off some where " Yeah right :D I'd almost bet he still has that rope.

Last year I left one of those Sthil Fiskar axes on a job, was using it to sight a spar in tight place, leaned it against another tree and just left it there, actually forgot I used the darn thing, went back for it, of course it was gone and nobody knew anything about it. OUCH, that hurt a little $ 40 bucks gone. Still haven't replaced it. My main concern was that some kid(s) might have gotten a hold of it and hurt themselves.

Most people are pretty honest and call to say some tools were left behind or clothes, most people just would not have a use for some of the tools we use, then they would have to get out and actually work to use them.

I've returned to the jobsite after we'd left a couple pull-lines in em overnight. Some Uncool Person cut em off as high as they could reach, and skedaddled with em.

i left my prussic and caribener on job last week was rushing it walked, made it harder this week breaking in new one.ive left a wedge and axe on a stump in the middle of the bush trekked back was still sitting there.left a bit of sanity here n there:laugh:

Last week I was gettin saddled up to do a good sized silver maple and right when I was gettin ready to tie in a nasty thunder storm rolled in, It was late in the day so I just decided to call it a day and I packed up every thing and headed home. When I got there the next morning I found my micro pulley and a rope snap on the ground. I felt like a bone head, but at least I didnt loose it. I had a ground man once loose the oil cap to a saw. Dont ask me how he did that.
