Several ?'s about my Stihl 056 mag2. I just replaced the piston (56mm) & jug with a ported jug. The stihl manual on this saw says carb settings is low 1 & high 1 1/4. Should I stick with this setting or simply set per max rpm specs with a tach? Should I recheck after its broke in? How many tanks should run thru it before it can be considered broke in? Does stihl have the best tach on the market? Mine does not have a chain brake, but there is a slot in the front hand guard for the chain brake arm. Was this an optional feature on this saw? If so does that mean that the chain brake wasn't inboard mounted but located in the side cover like on the husqvarnas? I would like to have a chain brake on this saw for safety. Is there a chain brake kit for this saw or what? I've learned most everything for this saw is nla so, as with the piston, I'm having to search nationwide for old stock parts or used parts. I've had success with stihl dealers out west around the axmen tv series area. I'm running a 28" sugihara bar & may put a bow bar on it, in which case I would definately need a chain brake. Last question....it has a full wrap handle, which I don't want. Would I be better off to sale my handle and buy a regular handle or just cut the wrap side of this one off with a hack saw? Thanks for all yalls help!!!!

Holy cats... :help:

Those carb settings should get you by... but you said you have a "ported" jug on it now... So who ported it? If you did it... it seems odd to me that you ported a jug but don't know where to set the carb for initial setup. Anyways... since it is ported, you might need to richen them up a bit more.

No wide open throttle with no load. Make a few cuts, and then shut the saw down and let it cool down completely... make a few more cuts again, and then let it cool down again... do this 4 or 5 times to run some heat cycles through it. That is what I have done for brand-new never been run saw break-in. Then you should be good to go with runnin' the saw under normal conditions.

Not sure about a tach... never used one. I tune by ear. So someone should be along to answer the tach question... As far as the chainbrake goes... Stihl had a dealer installed option for the 056's that didn't have a chain brake. That will be a hard item to find nowadays. The 056 is a popular collectors item, so not many for parts are available either.

I would not hack that handle in 2 pieces. I would take it off and selll it on ebay or offer it here on AS... then get a half wrap. The full wrap handle for an 056 mag2 will get a decent price.

No, I didn't port it. I bought it from a man at a stihl dealership in Washington. He ported it. Thanks for all the helpful tips.

Does anybody know the aproximate year(s) when the 056 Mag II was produced? I was guessing the mid to late 80's.

I have a 1991 dealer product book with the mag 2 in it. That may have been its last year.

Thanks for the information, I didn't have any idea they were produced that late.
