I called the guy from KK a couple of years ago about that and asked him to compare it to the Hobbs and the GRCS. He just laughed. That was enough for me. I bought a Hobbs and later, when my ground crew got cut down to one, I bought a GRCS. I prefer the Hobbs if we're just dropping big stuff but the GRCS is so versatile that it gets pulled out of the truck about 3 to 1 over the Hobbs. If I had it to do over I'd just buy the GRCS and be done with it. It will change your methods of getting a tree on the ground safely and peacefully.

Phil

The 7000 is just a bollard with some ears on. Call it a step above a port-a-wrap because the strap takes the play you get with the sling.

The 7000R with the ratchett is a step up because you can put a bar in it and crank up, soemthing like the Hobbs but a lesser SWL.

The Hobbs can crank up, but needs 2 men to operate in that mode.

The great thing about the GRCS is that it self tails when cranking up, and has a 2 speed gear set. it is lighter then the Hobbs, so 1 man can install it on all but huge trees. The Hobbs needs 2 men just to carry it to the tree.

Most people who own the GRCS think wonder why they put the purchace off so long.

lowering devices

I just purchased a grcs and bought it mainly for the purpose of hiking my lazy carcass up the tree. Well you will need a power supply cuz a gas drill won't cut it. As for lowering i read the other replies to your question and do not doubt them. I am so used to taking down trees without the grcs sometimes i think it is just faster to just use a rope and take a wrap or two. Anyways the grcs i think will prove to be a valuable asset for lifting or lowering.:givebeer:

That is because you get frustrated with the learning curve and get frustrated too soon.

Give some time and you will start working bigger and faster.

Nothing beats having the groundy be able to suck some tension into the rig so that the piece peels out away from you nice and easy every time.

grcs

Actually John Paul I just used it only once and really never got a chance to get frustrated. Besides it takes alot more than a learning curve to frustrate me. If i showed you what i did today you would throw up. 5.5 feet at the butt 80feet tall beside a house and hydro lines (primary). cut and cleaned up in 3 hrs and not a scratch on a thing . not even my arm. so do yourself a favor and don't prejudge anyones intelligence because you just make yourself look bad. There are alot of guys out there that go rodeo and i am definitely one of them.

Yo, I dont think JPS was trying to disparage you in any way. You paid 3k for a tool and he was trying to be supportive. Cowboy, Rodeo, whatever you call it, you're not the first guy here, to be it.................;)

I too am a "cowboy", a "hack" according to some, for sure I rodeo, I like to hammer stuff down fast and nasty, I have worked around big power, I have pushed my luck. So what? The guy is trying to help you out here, I have never used this machine, but like any machine it probably has its place and takes skill to use well. And why do you need a machine to get you up a tree, spurs not working for ya?

By poplar do you mean cottonwood? I have climbed way over 100' on big cottonwoods, and cut them down, its just work thats all.

so when you did these trees did you spur up with a lanyard or did you have a line in the tree already?

Steelcore right from the bottom, threw it around and climbed up. Like how I always climb every tree, unless I can use a bucket to get up the first 60 or so feet.

Don't you find that the bark will catch the flipline? 100ft+ wow that's got to be 4 or 5 ft dbh. Like to see that! Also nice big beautiful trees i don't spur i try to do the best i can.

Well said!!!

Just sitting here thinking. Some new members really crack me up. (And i'm speaking as a relative newbie to this site myself.) They may be the big fish in their little pond but they're in the ocean now. For example, i've been top climber for the the last couple years in my neck of the woods, yet there are guys here that could take me to school without even breaking a sweat. Guess it all depends on our experiences. 90+ feet is a decent sized tree to me yet have worked with guys from a different climbing background that just laugh at something that size. There is a wealth of experience on this site if you are just humble enough to accept it. Well, guess i'm done rambling.:) What was this thread about? Oh yeah, lowering devices-grcs for me-sometimes wonder how i worked without it-definitely makes life easier!

bunch of ?????es

just kidding , I think its funny there is drama everywhere. Even among the least likely. I like both lowering devices. I have the first, but always wanted one that I could ratched up the weight. Wish I had one. I have not climbed trees very long, give or take, and I dont brag that Ive climbed tall poplars. The scariest are the 60 foot, 16" diameter not the fat tall ones. New to the site. Enjoy the info and videos. thanks

And oh, the stories they tell! Well, hey I want to party with you wildman! (sort of a quote from "Stripes" Bill Murray. 80, 90 foot takedowns, no ****oos!
