At the high point of my CAD in March I picked this nice 10-10 saw off from eBay. I paid $18.00 for it. The listing indicated that it pulled over hard "Could be an easy fix" Yep; I said easy fix sounds great and its cheap. Of course the shipping was more then the auction........

Here is the fine saw from the ebay auction...

Somehow during the shipping (they shipped the bar in the same box) the bar must have pushed through the box so I lost that. When the saw arrived I quickly started a diagnosis. It felt weird when you cranked the flywheel. It would turn then lock. If you reversed the flywheel just a tad it would make it though. I pulled the muffler and the piston locked to have some scoring.

I finally got the piston out and found that one of the needle bearings had blown apart where the wrist pin rides. Found the bearing down in the crank. Nice easy fix for this one!

I put a notice on the swap meet and Stinkbait was kind enough to be able to supply a piston and cylinder.

Nice score! Sorry to hear that you lost the bar. One of the many things that I enjoy about this site is how helpful other menbers are with obtaining parts.

How can you be sure that you've gotten all of the bearing out of the crankcase?

Hi Dan Thanks....It is a full tear down as you can see. That was the only sure way. Besides I had it this far down I decided a little clean up and got carried away...
 
I'm glad you are keeping us up to date on this saw. I was wondering how it turned out.

Finally found the time to get back to it.....Got carried away with a PM610...The 610 was not a real project saw but it was fun. Plus I was enjoying running the 610 while bucking up some firewood.

A little cleaning and painting in the high tech paint booth

I have some final parts coming. So the last week I have been working on getting this little neglected saw's parts cleaned up and a dab of paint here and there.

Did you use flat black for the black parts? They look really good. What type of paint did you use?

I am finally starting to put some assemblies together while waiting for the final load of parts.

I used flat black I thought it looked better then the semi gloss that was on it. The paint (black) is actually stove paint...LOL

As for the yellow it is a Velspar paint I found at Tractor supply. I think it is called sun the number on the can was 21945....Closest I could find to the original MAC yellow on the saw

Are you going to try and recreate the writing on the air filter cover?

I've been looking at that. The writing is stencilled and scares the heck outta me.. I may try to make a stencil from what is on there and then repaint and letter it. I am holding on that one till I can come up with a good plan to do it

More paint work

Just did the final paint to the clutch cover. I had painted the base coat yellow and today masked off the Mcculloch logo on the cove so I could paint the black.

I cut out a hole in a paper bag and taped the bag on the housing.

Then I tried to carefully tape the Mac mountains in the logo...I did slip while cutting the tape. :censored: Hence the scratch. It shows more in the photos then on the cover. Another learning experience.....

Unbagged! I had greased under the bag to help hold it down and allow me to wipe away any over spray that may have seeped through.

Final cleaned up a little. Couple of spots but not bad overall.

Be carefull with that paint, I tried it and watched the gas peel it right off the saw. I ended up redoing my SP60 with automotive paint.

How long did you let it cure? I have used it with no problems. My mono actually leaks gas and it hasn't taken any paint off yet. I let my paint cure for like a week though while waiting for parts to finish the build.

I don't remember right off, but I think it was at least 3-4 days and some of that was sitting by the woodstove in the shop.

I think since hes gone this far that like you say to give it at least a week or two.

Same here, but it was only three days old when I put it together. Flipped the saw on it's side to fuel it, after I did I got distracted and never sat it up right, fuel leaked from the vent and it sat in it. The paint on the clutch cover bubbled up and wiped off with a rag...bummer.
 
Thanks for the warnings. I will make sure I don't get it near gas for at least a week. I may test some gas on a small area before I do the final assembly. I cannot imagine how happy I will be if I put gas in the saw and it starts bubbling away like some cheap transformation in a sci-fi flick! :hmm3grin2orange:

I cant remember who it was but a member put the parts in the oven to cure the paint. I think it was lowest setting and not sure for how long.:cheers:
