I found one of these yesterday at the dump, complete including original bar and chain and yellow webbed bar cover - the chain was even sharp! Fired right up and I used it all day to cut up a huge pile of "rounds". While I am aware that these don't compare to modern saws in terms of weight, noise and safety features I was pleasantly surprised at how light and balanced this was compared to say a Homie Super XL - It was alot of fun. My questions are: Can I use 32:1 in this or should I use 20:1? The saw is in really good original condition including paint, should I dump out fuel and oil and shelve it or would this be something you guys would use occasionally? Are maintenace parts available? I am sure this isn't a real rare bird but its fun to find something that old in good funtional condition. I can post some pics tonite.

Great home-owner saw.
Good luck finding carb parts, I just cant help with a McCulloch 66503 carb. Though it did well against it's competition because of the well venting muffler. Not that the opportunity does not exist to put a hole directly across from the exhaust port. :blob2:

I would start it every month until I found a carb kit though. I would stay at 20:1 mix until that time as well.

The collectors site list this saw as having a Mac carb. Can a Walbro be mounted in place?

Good luck on that. That would have to be a black art; you have 2 adjusters and it would take some luck to have the holes line up for the adjusters. You want to stay in your power range... If your willing to drill you might as well get a Tillotson HS-108B series or SDC walbro I believe would allow you to have all carb adjustments outside the saw.

If I was going to re-invent it I might start there in my search. You need to be mindful of fuel line diameter (make sure you can get it in the case and it mates with existing connector to the tank) and intake demands.

The saw currently runs, but until the Mac Guru's chime in...
I say parts are a concern. Congratulations by the way on your find.

I'm sure a normal square carby off the later saws in the 10 series would fit and work just fine as Mc replaced the Mac carby which used the old diaphrams with the updated carby possibly the Walbo.

Mc Bob.

Worry not one little bit about the carby. It's just a Tilley HS with a different set of adjusters. The rebuild kits are less than 10 bucks.
McCulloch was so user friendly that you can mix and match most of the "10" series parts.
An example is my 6-10.It has a 6-10 block and piston,a 2-10 crank and a 10-10 flywheel. The icing on that cake is a big bore Tilley HS from a sp 125.
