Mac 44A Super

I picked this saw up a while back and haven't had time to work on it. Well I finally pulled the carb off and the the gaskets are all dry. I thought i had the carb kit for it but I'm not even sure where to start to figure out what carb it is. The only markings on the carb are a D stamped on the top and an A on the side.

That is probably one of those McCulloch carbs and yes McCulloch used to built their own carbs. I believe the slang terminology for those carbs is a "bullfrog". I will have to look a little but there is a fellow member who knows about those carbs, he even has a thread on rebuilding them somewhere. If I am not mistaken the carb kits are not easy to come by, not cheap either.

No, not a bullfrog and not a flatback Mac carby. It is something else, but parts are out there. I've got a set of gaskets and diaphragms enroute for mine (Super 55A)

I had a kit that I thought was the right one. I think I have a McCulloch 38-4184 kit but its not even close.

I'm really at a loss. The only stamps on the outside is a D and and A on the side. I figured there would be more to go by.

It is a Mac carby. Check with old Mac dealers. I think the early kart motors used this carb as well as the S44A/55A.

Do you have an IPL for this thing?

Nice looking Super 44A. As for the carb situation...


If it was my saw (and I'd like to take my place in line in case you decide to pass it on....LOL) , then I'd swap in a Tillotson HL. Unless you can find diaphragms for that 'early flatback' Mac carb, you're just spinning your wheels with it.

Once you get an IPL, write down the diaphragm numbers on a sticky and keep it on your computer monitor. Scour the ebay listings for those diaphragms. You never know what you'll find. McCulloch dealers often carried individual diaphragms rather than 'kits' for carburetors. Something to keep in mind...

Kart version of the Mac flatback, manufactured for McCulloch by Walbro. Google Sugar Creek Supply or look of feebay. The kit will have the diaphrams for it, but if you want to replace the welch plugs and the high-side check-ball, look on feebay for a Mac carb check ball kit. You'll be ready to rock.

I talked with Joe Salva. He said i was the first person asking about the kit for this saw. He said he'll work on making one up. I'll keep you all posted on what comes of the kit. Thanks again, Bill

The kit is ready. I'm waiting for it to get here. Joe's calling it the Flatback 2. I'll post pics when I get it.
