A friend of mine just gave me this Super 44A and the 1-70 i got a couple weeks ago. The 1-70 is a nice runner and the 44 will need a good tuneup.
Cleaned them both up and there not to bad.

I love the tag on the 1-70. "Number One in World Sales" Trying to make the buyer feel better about owning the Mac. Those 2 saws sure look a lot alike. What's the progression from the 44A to the 1-70?

I can only go by Mike Acres site and the two saws
were made from 1959 to 1960 and are 87cc's. Not
sure why Mcculloch needed two saws that are very
close in design in there line up at the same time.

Nice friend!

It seems there are quite a few models that share a lot in common. Change something like the color of the air box cover and bingo....new model. Look at the 33 / 35 series of saws. They are all 54 cc. :chainsaw:

Really nice saw Lee, you do indeed have some good friends. I really like the red goose logo on the front of the 44.

I think the 44 Series could be fit with a gearbox to make a 55 Series saw. In fact, I recently acquired a group of saws that includes a Super 55 that had been converted "back" to direct drive. At least the 44/55 are 72 cc, the Super 44/Super 55 are 80 cc, and the Super 44A/Super 55A are 87 cc as best I can determine.

The 55 Series and the 1-80 are covered in the same IPL so there is a close connection there as well.

I'm not 100% but I believe the 44 Series saws had removable heads, the 1-70 are one piece. I think they all had more "aggressive" porting than the 200/250/300 Series that followed.

Look how the handle mounts and tanks changed from the 44 to the Super 44 to the Super 44A

Does the 1-70 have an auto-oiler? If they were both available at more or less the same time, how was a dealer supposed to sell one over the other???

Chris B.

The selling point on the Super 44A was its high chain speed for that era (top no-load @ 12,5k) and the 1-70 was a stumping brute. Like Mark said, the port timing was different and in the case of the Super 44- very aggressive. The 44 engine was popular for conversion to karting.

I have a couple of 1-70's and a 1-71, and the IPL for the 1-76, none indicate an automatic chain oiler.

I have in the shop two new oil tanks that appear they would fit any saw from the D-44 through the SP125, one with the machined fitting for the automatic oil pump and one without. I got the pieces to allow me to repair the Super 44 (or maybe the Super 44A, don't remember right now) which does not have the automatic oiler, and the 740 which does have the automatic oiler. More projects waiting for time...

Thanks Lee for starting an interesting discussion.

Not a problem Mark, We all like to learn something
new everyday including me.

J.J. Thanks for the helpful info. I did know the 44 had
the removable head but thought that the 1-70 might as well. Guess not.
So the Super 44A would be considered quite the hotrod
compaired to the 1-70 even though they share the same
displacement?

I wonder what the price difference was between the two saws. I would think the Super 44A would be a bit more
pricy than the 1-70 back when they were new.

I'd have to assume the one on Craigslist doesn't run and hasn't for quite a while.
when the seller says "no idea if it works" then one isn't _assuming anything_, he has been told right up front.

but i find this one more attractive than that burned up stihl somebuddy else here just bought.

My 1-70 is a drop head. Super 44A through 1-72 all were. Port timing could well be different in them, though.

You're assuming the seller is dishonest. If he is truthful, and really doesn't know if it runs or not, maybe it will run. I've bought chainsaws and turned around and sold them on 'the bay and I never did put gas in them to see if they would run or not. About 80% of the used saws that come in my shop just need a little attention to the fuel system, fuel line and/or carb kit.

Great tread as someone allready pointed out but I thought I would say it again. I really like the older Mac's and wish I could afford to add more to my collection.I have a few 10-10's I'm building one good one. I also have a good 7-10 carcus with a good engine I'm going to put in a 10-10 frame. My only runner is a 450 and I am very proud of it. Runs like a top and looks decent. It has the Mac carb that has the primer rather than a choke. One of the best $75 I ever spent on a saw. BTW the saws that started this tread are 2 fine examples of yellow iron. They cleaned up really well and u are lucky to have a friend that would give u them. Looks like u are makind him proud.
