Made my own Air Spade today

Used 3/4" galvanized pipe with a Chicago fitting, necked down to 1/2". Used a water heater style cut off valve. Also used a T fitting and made a 6" handle. Made the overall length about 6.5 feet, and hammered the end of the pipe down fairly flat. Going to try it out Thursday. About $40 in parts. If it works well, I'm going to paint it black and put a rifle scope on it. :greenchainsaw:

I was planning on renting a diesel powered tow behind compressor. It puts out a lot of air, I mean a whole lot. I've got to dig a trench to install a drainage system, and need to work around some cable and phone lines. The air tool should do the trick, but we'll see. I might need to modify the tip, I'll have to play with it once it's hooked up. The trench is going to be about 2 feet deep and 200' long.

It is kind of neat looking, hence the paint and scope. It might need a sling and a bayonet too, and maybe a bipod LOL. I can shout "Get some" while I'm trenching. (Just kidding)

Bowhunter- we use a Grimer schmidt i think it is 180 cfm...Huge and plenty of pressure!

Any chance it can be converted to PTO driven and 3 point mounted?

I'm scheming on a zero contact method of cultivation in vinyards/Blueberrys.

Air power is kinda not my bag yet..

Just go easy with the Bayonette mount or some politician will ban the whole thing before ya murder some innocent broadleaf.

Update:

Well I finally broke out the airspade today. It has officially been reclassified as an air knife. This thing is bad. I rented a 375 cfm compressor, and promptly blasted a 12" deep, 200' trench in about 15 seconds.

It really only took me about 20 minutes total, and it was cutting through hard compacted clay and roots on a site where they cut the timber with a feller buncher and skidder. I'm real happy with the way it turned out, and I never did find any of the buried utilities. It didn't seem to hurt any tree roots either, but I'd want to cut the pressure back if I had to excavate someone's prize japanese red maple.

The air at the nozzle looked blue, like a propane flame. It got pretty hot, even with heavy gloves, and was pretty loud even with my ear muffs on.

I know how I'm blowing the leaves off the lawn this fall.

Heck, I made my big shot out of two 4' of conduit pipe connected by a coupler and rubber feet on the ends. The rack was a bike rack to hang up bikes ins garages that I welded to spec with my first welder - a cutting torch. Then the rubber sling is a work-out rubber tube from Big 5 Sports. The cup is a whiffle soft ball I cut in half, the throw bag a baseball I drilled a hole through, and just kite string. I tried to hide it from all of my customers lol
