That piston does look BAD:dizzy: But mabey they wanted to leave the extra material to add weight,as the piston does weigh more than the old one.Mabey stihl realized the assembly was vibrating too much an was causing skirt failing.Lighter pistons do cause a saw to vibrate more at high speed.Just some thoughts.Mark

Ok so if you use this oem piston what is going to happen? It could have possibley missed quality control checks? I can't imagine a dealer who wouldn't replace it especially after paying $350 for it, and you probably wouldn't even notice the 6 grams of difference in the engine's ability to rev

The "added weight" has been with that piston for many (11) years... as was mentioned earlier, it was beefed around the piston bosses and had an improved oil recess, to prevent failures.

All 088/880 have had this piston since new; it's been supplied as a replacement part for the 084 since 1997.

Reminds me of an OEM 660 piston that someone complained about a while ago (not on the AS) - even the color fits.

+1 ,,,,,
whats up with this ,,,,, this is a problem that will concern both brands (Husky/Stihl) since both are using Mahle !?!?!?

I have never seen one unfinished like that. I wouldn't be concerned, but if you are, have your dealer call his Stihl distibuator. The last 088 piston I used was very well finished.

I trust Mahle's metalurgy and process...
