I have a Mahoning 400 and have gone through allot of wood since we first fired it on Jan 1 of this year. It has a capacity of 352 gallons and is a wood hog in my opinion. I'm heating a 2500sq' home and a 1280sq' 2008 mobile home and used approx. 6 to 7 cords or more to date. I cannot get by without tending to it 3 times a day. My neighbor has a Central Boiler and gets 12hrs between fills. He does not understand why we are having such a hard time with our OWB. Is there any other Mahoning owners out there that can offer any advice? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I would check out a different stove.I know a guy who bought a Mahoning and burnt 19 cords a year, he was sick of it! He sold his Mahoning and Bought a Taylor 750 and burnt 9 cords in it! I think the Taylor holds about 565gallons of water compared to Mahoning's 352. I have had a T-500 for two years and wouldn't part with it.

There is three places for the heat to go and it would be pretty hard to guess where it is going from the limited info given but, a full cord a week? Whoa! First off there is no freebies and if you are heating two corn cribs it is going to burn some wood no matter what kind or brand of woodburner you own. Second tell us about your underground installation, if you are thawing the ground that is at least part of the problem. Third is the boiler it self and I have nothing to say, good or bad about Mahonings as I no of none around here.

I have a mahoning 300 and I'm heating a 1000sq ft house and a 1800 sq ft shop , I'm pretty much happy with everything . I purchased a tri-axle load of logs in the fall and have only used maybe two cords of it , I have been cutting for about an hour on the weekends and keeping up . It lasts 12 hrs pretty easy and if the shop isn't turned on I have had it go 16-17 hrs. Wish I new how much wood I've cut but with only cutting a front end loader bucket or two at a time I couldn't guess an amount . How far is your blower door opening when the blower turns on ?? And where did you set the aquastat??

Mahoning ODF experience

I have a model 300 Mahoning ODF. It does use alot of wood but most of the wood I have burned in it is pine and Hemlock since that is what is most available on my property. In general I would say it uses 12 cords per year all year long. One thing about the Mahoning is that it also burns coal effectively.

Last year when we had -15F temps it kept up no problem but I threw a 50 lb bag of coal in it which makes a huge difference compared to just wood.

Based on what your original post says I have to question the installation of the underground pipes. How well did you insulate them?

If you have questions PM me and I'll try and give some advice etc. I'm in NE PA..............J
