ithink bens also talkinaboiut folks that just bare dn on their saw cause thats how they were taught. idealy in my opinion the wt o the saw should take it into a good cut.. with at the most just lite pressure. depending on whether its gettin dark an u trying to get done,so u can move on somewhere else tommorow

I use motor oil. I'm pretty sure that Stihl recommends soaking their new chains in motor oil, in addition to Oregon. I think it was in some paperwork that came with the chain. Not sure. I brought this up on the forestry forum a while back, there were some there that scoffed and some that did it, with their own techniques, just like here.
I do field sharpen occasionally, just prefer to take them home and do it on the bench.

Is it excessive heat that causes stretch? I seen some guys get a bar so hot that if they put some extra oil onto the bar and chain, it sizzles and smokes. BTW, Jokers, I never thought to make a small cut in a log to hold the bar steady for field sharpening, and none of my bosses have done it either. I will certainly try it. Not as good as a vise, but alot better than sitting on the ground, holding the saw with one hand and filing with the other. My boss is gonna think I'm a genius. You don't mind if I tell him I came up with the idea myself do you?;)
