What do you mean, you stole it? You found it unattended and took it home?

Orange Again

Brad,
What grit/grits do you use during the sanding proceedure?
I've tried the headlight restoration kit (3M) with very limited sucess. I don't think it was aggresive enough to start with.
Does the plastic "oxidize"?

I take a razor blade, scrap alot of the older crap off, then finish off with 160 grit, then 300 grit paper. Clean it off good with soap and water. Dry it with a rag then continue to clear coat it. Put it in a warm place (dashboard of your truck on a hot day with all the windows closed works good.)

There you have it. It takes much more coarse paper than you would think. I also use a razor blade for the deeper nicks. Don't try to cut them out, scripe them out instead.

The plastic, actually PA66-GF does degrage on the outer surface and is porous enough that oil, sweat and other fluids will get trapped in the pores. Therefore to get rid of the discoloration and stains the outer surface has to be removed, scraping off a couple of thousands of an inch will speed up the process, then sand it smooth like has already been suggested. The surface then needs to be sealed up again and the clear coat will do that nicely.

I wonder if the plastic headlight refinishing stuff (like Meguire's Plastix or Mother's headlight polish/protectant) as a step in between the final sanding and the clear coat would offer any benefit?

I'v tried headlight refinishing on multiple saws, never worked for me.

Had this ol' 028 that needed attention.

Didn't do much to the recoil cover, payed more attention to the top cover/filter cover.

Came out looking like this after a couple hours.

Have yet to do the gas tank

Call me crazy but I like the pics of the thing all scuffed up and badass looking. Less likelihood of it getting stolen like that too :D. Sometimes I scratch my head at the videos of guys using their older, somehow showroom looking saws in what look like the clothes I wear to church :dizzy:.
