My 6401 is not oiling properly. When I turn the oiler all the way up it leaks like crazy but still won't oil the chain.
I also am having trouble adjusting the carb correctly but that is for another time.

where is it leaking? Take the oil line off the pump and see if there is a restriction in the discharge hose. If not, what kind of bar. If it is a new bar, there are chances the holes are not lined up correctly.

What kind of carb issues? This saw has a rev limiter, so it is a differant sound than you are used to.

It is leaking from the bottom of tha saw like near the adjustment screw.
The bar is a stock Makita 20". What do I have to tear into to remove the hose and check for blocks?

This saw just seems very hard to start and it sometime wants to load up. Adjusting the high side seems to have little effect as the screw only turns 1/4 turn. I am used to adjusting my Stihls so this is a learning experience for me.

take the bar cover off and run the saw with the bar and chain off of it. Oil should be flowing at a steady drip from the oil line spout. If it is puking out the bottom, you may have to remove the clutch and check out the pump. it may be as simple as the pump is loose and not sealing against the housing.

This carb has limiters on them. All of the newer ones do to, becuase of the great EPA. If it is loading up, sounds like the carb is too rich on the low jet. You may have to remove the limiters to get the correct adjustment. You can have any dealer remove the limiters, or you can clip them off so you can get the adjustment you need.

Hope this helps some. Hard to tell what the oil problem is for sure. It may need a new oil hose between the tank and the oiler, if it is an older model.

Ok oil is coming out of the spout in a steady stream. Is the little metal plate behind the bar supposed to be screwed to the case or just floating? It seems this plate may be shifting when I put on the bar and re-directing the oil flow.

should be bolted down with a screw between the bar studs.

Clean out your bar. it is likeyl you have a bunch of crap in there causing it not to oil right.

To take the clutch off you need a clutch removal tool. The leaking out the bottom is where the oil line presses up against the pump in a compression fit. I put a folded paper towel behind the oil line to give a little more pressure when the pump was screwed down. It stopped the leaking on one of my 6401's.

Just in case you didn't know this already.
