I`m looking to buy a new saw for general bucking. With all the positive talk about the 7900`s I was wondering if the Makita DCS 540 is a quality piece. I was originally going to get an 036 but lately I`ve been thinking about trying a new Makita or Dolmar. Makita DCS 540 is a 54cc and would fit my current needs perfectly

Glenn-

The 540 is a great saw. They have a nicasil lined cylinder, single ring piston, and teflon-coated exhaust port. The fit and finish is as good as any professional saw on the market. They also take to modifications well if you ever go that route.

They are one of those good bang for the buck saws. It won't be the most outstanding performer for it's weight or displacement, but they are an excellent firewood saw, and I believe top notch in quality.

Hey Doc

I couldn`t see the whole pic. Try it again
If you do try it again, Doc, please be considerate and size it down to something less than 800x600 and/or 100kB in size.

I have a DCS 430 ( same family, 43cc ) and am very happy with it.
Makita seems to sell the 540 with a 21" bar which seems a bit long. The factory makita bars are kinda cheezy anyway, a good quality 18" might be a good idea if you get it.

I see that both the Makita SCA 520 and SCA 540 have the same cc and hp but the 520 has a 20" and the 540 has the 21" anybody know if there are any major differences? Otherwise they look the same.

A few weeks ago I almost purchased a 540 --I settled with buying a MS 360. the 360 does not take a back to any saw in it class and that you can take to the bank

The other make of saws are just as good. My next saw purchase will be a 540 or J red---372--I like saws !
