I had a pruning job for a customer with a Maple and several of the branches in the middle of the canopy had fungus on them that appears to cover the bark like I normally associate with dead branches that are well decaying, but these branches were all alive and the final few feet of most of them was clean and healthy. The fungus is dark black with purple tints towards the edge in most places, but one crotch pictured last had a thick white covering.
Some of them were pruned off during the course of my work (with regular cleanings of my tools), but there are quite a few branches left with this fungal covering. I'm concerned it could turn into cankers and choke some needed limbs. Is this something I can spray? Does anything have an ID? Thank you.
