Chris, I have used the Greek guy's rings in lots of saws with very good results. I dont have a 166 but have used them in my (Dolmar) Mac 6800 & 5200 which would be similar aged saws. Also used them in some later Dolmars and Makitas with no issues.

Al.

Thanks for the information Al. I think I will make a purchase and see what they look like.

I have heard good things about Caber rings, would think new fresh rings would have to be better than 25 year old ones?

I have used several of Leos' piston kits, they were very nice.

What is the airfoil thingy in the intake tract? The old 120 Supers had thay stalactite.

Nice yeller saw there.

Agreed -New rings are certainly better than old ones. Just did not want to risk a good cylinder which is basically irreplaceable (apart from rechrome) with something that may have been untried.

It seems that the caber products have had good reviews and I am willing to order a set of rings to see for myself.

I can only assume that the 'airfoil thingy' or semi 'bridge' in the cylinder intake port is designed to assist the intake process as well as offer support for the piston during operation.

Thanks for the information on the Caber products.

Well the parts have come in for the freshen up - new decomp valve assy, HT lead and boot, carb kit and a new set of rings.
I gave the saw a decent clean up today - degreased and dug out the accumulated dirt and oil from its previous life. Most of it came away pretty easily which was a bonus. Tomorrow I hope to get stuck into the assembly / rebuild, and will post some more pics when I can.

I spent some time on the the saw last night and she is now a runner.

The carb has a fresh kit through it, while the rest of the replaced parts include new piston rings, HT lead and fuel lines, and the decomp valve.
I enjoyed the minor overhaul on this saw as it was my first Dolmar, and it was nice to see the way a well thought out machine comes apart and goes back together. The 'modular' assembly of the cylinder, intake boot assembly, impulse line, carb, and intake was great, and saved alot of time.

Now its off to the fastener shop to get some new M6 x 25 inhex set screws for the wrap handle.

Regards,

Chris.

Looking good Chris, They are a great design and
well built saw.
I'm working on 2 orange ones at the moment
with new pistons and replated cylinders.
Hope to someday find a yeller one.

Thanks Lee - definitely agree with your comments about the design and being well built. Those two 166 projects you have on the board sound good. With replated cylinders and new pistons they will be strong machines no doubt.
I am yet to find an original orange Sachs Dolmar 166 out here - one sold on ebay a while back, but I think it had a buggered cylinder. I know of the whereabouts of a couple - just have to convince the owner to part with one.

Regards,

Chris.
