Well I took my 272XP into a mechanic for the second time in 21 years. I try to do all maint/repairs myself but this time, I could figure out my problem. In order to run with any kind of rpms, I had to totally close my high speed screw. So, I put a carb kit in it and it did the same thing. I brought it to a mechanic and he pressure tested the carb and said there was a leak behind the high screw. Parts were brass and rubber and could be ordered so I needed a whole new carb. 140.00 for the carb. I picked it up and paid for it. The mechanic said it was running great. I took it home and fired it up and it ran like crap, wouldn't even idle. It was actually worse than when I brought it to them. So I went back, asked him if he tuned the carb after putting it in. He claimed he did and that the saw was running perfect. Baloney! He proceeded to tune the carb while I was there(which I know exactly how to do). I saw him close the high speed all the way and asked him if he did so. He claimed that he didn't and that it was 3/4 turn from closed. I could tell the saw still didn't have the balls that it should've but I took it anyway. Just out of curiosity, I checked adjustment on high speed screw and it was closed all the way. So I called the boss and complained that not only was the saw running the same as when I brought it in, now I know that I didn't need the new carb. All after paying 233.00 for parts, labor, and tax. His claim is that the carb had a leak, so I needed the part anyway but bring the saw back in so his mech can take another look at it. I don't want to raise too much hell as I live in a small town. Sheeees

Don't know if this will help, but I've heard you can damage the needle valve seat if you screw the needle in too far, and then you will not have fine control of the mixture like you should. Also, this would cause you to have to close the needle valve all the way in order to lean the mix.
