I've got a friend coming up from Texas to do some contracting work in a couple of days.
He's bringing some Dump Trucks, one which will be filled to the rim with 2 yr old mesquite firewood....he says he's burnt out on burning it for firewood & for cooking!:msp_confused:

He wants to swap his truck full of mesquite for about a face cord and a half of my seasoned pecan wood and offer about $100 to boot...he says his dump truck holds about 2 1/2 cords of mesquite.

I love the flavor of mesquite, yet I'm not versed in how would do as a firewood, I've read about the BTU rating being pretty good...he swears up and down that it burns cleaner, longer and MUCH hotter than pecan...he just loves pecan!!!

Just wanted some feedback from some of you guys who have experience on burning both of them as firewood.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know how you could possibly go wrong with that deal, even if you just held it back to make charcoal and cook with it.
Personally I like to cook over it so well I couldn't stand to see it turned into ash in the stove.

heating value?

What about heating value?

Thanks for the info...that's another perspective I need to examine as well!

Mesquite burns “HOT”
Personally I don’t care for it that much. If I use it, it must be 4/5 years old or it is too strong for me.
I do use it for grilling, burn it down to coals and then grill with it.
For smoking a little goes a long way.
It can have lots of wood boors in it and if infected you can literally watch your pile turn to saw dust in no time.
I like to keep a little on hand for a deferent taste every once in a while but my favorite for cooking is red or post oak.
Mesquite makes great firewood, burns long and “HOT”

Reggie I have never used Mesquite in a stove for heat, but have burnt plenty of Pecan. I have a place in the Mountains in NE Alabama and there's no shortage of Pecan firewood on the mountain when the high winds take them down.

Pecan is decent fire and smoking wood but there's no shortage of it in Bama. Mesquite, not so much...

Reggie, if you don’t like it and it’s scarce in your area, you could always sell it. Might find a mesquite lover in the area and make a nice profit.

man, THIS ^^^^^^^^!!!!!

He would be the only guy in his area with quantities of a rare locally cooking wood! I'd be busting that stuff up smaller and bagging it or bundling it for sale, and just keep a little for personal stash.
