I worked with a guy who hooked his pole pruner to pants pocket when he was climbing. Somehow, he got the pole and rope caught and ended up stabbing himself in the butt for 10 stitches. Plus the embarassment of trying to explain to the nurses how it happened.

Thats funny, beats getting your finger cut off if you grab it by the head and it closes. I hang the Jameson to my belt, left side, hooked into a biner. The Polesaw has short strap on it that I clip to this biner when I use it. The Jameson is a great tool, two or three sticks, die-electricaly tested. great for hanging ropes, or busting off branches or snipping them from around the primary.

where i work we are not allowed to use carabiners as a replacement for a knot on a rope. no one uses the running bowland with a half hitch anymore or a cow hitch? and as for using a micro pully for a lowering device thats not thier intended use. Thier safe working load isnt high enough to account for shock loading ive seen first hand a 100-150 pound log snap a petzl micro pully ended up cracking a side walk in front of a high school. the guy in the bucket didnt have the required block with sling so he rigged it up with webbing slings a carabiner and a micro pully. it worked for about the first three pieces he chunked down then bam he had to go explain to the boss why he was using a micro pully as a lowering device.

surprised to hear that

I'll keep that in mind next time I use one. I often use them on smaller stuff when I don't feel like dragging up the cmi arb block and sling.
I would guess the pully was defective [had a crack from being dropped on high?] The sharp bend the the small pulley puts on the rope, the weak link should be the rope at the bend. I beleive my little ones are 25kn. A quick look at wespur show the weakest ones to still be 4500 lbs [most are 7g]. That's a pretty hefty hit a 150 lb peice would have to make. Either that pully was defective or some one dropped a piece way to far [with a very strong rope].

You make the excellent point that its better to have lots of room in your system to account for murphy

Not to break off in a new direction but does anyone carry the polesaw with the sheath while climbing? After a buddy took 20 stiches to the forearm the climbers came up with a way to carry the pole blade sheathed but yet it only adds a second or two when preparing the saw for use or putting it back on your belt while in the tree.

the only time i use the sling and biner combo is on the smaller stuff. and i only use it to hang the wood where it is so that i can work it from where i am in the tree. anything that i judge to be "bigger" than that is when the rope comes into play.

i swear by the half hitch/running bowline combo and when its time to rig wood thats what i use.

Yeah I always climb with the scabbard on it. Caught me in the back of the leg one time and apparently they go through flesh a little faster than wood.

BAck to an original question in the first thread: if you want a double pulley for redirects that doesnt have the becket in the middle, there is one available that was made for this purpose. Its made by ISC, red in color, and is known as a 'double re-direct pulley'.
