Ok guys, Mike has had to evidently move his site because of adult popups linking to his site. Anyone know by chance what the new address is???

They have periodic trouble with their domain name server.  Currently, my DNS cache has their name server's address listed as 192.168.1.99, which it (mine) got from it (theirs).  Any addresses that start 192.168.1 are not routeable on the Internet since they're reserved for private networks.  It's either a problem within their own setup or that of their provider's.

The web site itself may have been down earlier today but in any event it was not reachable from here since the name server which maps the name "www.acresinternet.com" to the IP address 64.180.101.188 (incidentally the same address as the name server) was unreachable for some reason.  Aside from network connectivity problems, which are the trump card, they would likely enjoy better availability if they designated a secondary name server.

Site

Glen, Thanks for the excellent info. Every time I pull up the main page of his site, an adult pop up tries to open. I know he has had trouble in the past with this. It is very annoying. I am getting tired of seeing the same Jenna. lol :)

I've never had adult popups come up on my pc, it must be something thats on your machine you dont realise is there.I have had spyware issues in the past, theres only ONE really permanant solution to them: backup any important data on the hard drive and reformat the whole thing.

This is a bit off topic for this forum.

Ray, by using the IP address directly you're leaving the whole DNS process out of the loop.  The name "www.acresinternet.com" is merely a convenience for we humans to use.  It's much easier to remember that than "64.180.101.188" for most people.  When we enter a crutch (name) into the browser (manually or via a link) the first thing the browser does is query the DNS system for the address belonging to the name so it can go about it's business of fetching data.  Software ultimately deals directly in IP addresses and needs to determine what we humans mean when we use a name.

So long as the network is up, and the webserver is up, the direct IP address will always work.  If the name is being used and the browser doesn't already know the corresponding address, the hierarchy of name servers is typically walked-through until an answer is given.  If none of them in the chain has the information cached the authoritative name server itself is ultimately asked.  As was happening earlier today, that authoritative server was unavailable for whatever reason, so the web browser can do nothing.  It should be noted that the Name Server and Web Server are simply running programs and they can both be on the same computer, which appears to possibly be the case at Mike's site.  It's entirely possible for one or the other service to become wedged and not directly affect the operation of the other.

Greatmac, I highly doubt the popup is directly related to Mike's site.  Either you have some nefarious software in place on your computer, or a name server or proxy somewhere between you and core of the Internet is able to send you to a third-party site which creates the ad and then sends you on to your desired location.  Something on your computer is likely the better possibility.

Wiping your system clean and reinstalling it is not a permanent solution; you will likely still end up the way you were unless you change your habits.&nbsp; The best course of action to prevent unwanted traffic is to disable javascript and any other scripting languages you have enabled.&nbsp; That's usually a drastic move these days as more and more clueless web designers use their FrontPage or whatever to create monstrosities and call them web sites.&nbsp; Without javascript enabled, suc<s>k</s>h sites are mostly useless.

Obtaining a good filtering proxy software package is <i>practically</i> the best defense.&nbsp; They burden the user somewhat come time to specifically enable popups or cookies to certain necessary sites, but are definitely worth the work.&nbsp; Check out <a href="http://www.privoxy.org/">www.privoxy.org</a> for a pretty good example.

I guess if I had a point I've forgotten it.

gr8mac check your computer for spyware

gr8mac I will guarantee that you have been infected with adware programs on your machine.

I had found that my box was infected by programs called adware which are a program called a parasite that change your web browser and many other things without your consent along with popping up all types of strange things such as what you are seeing. Spyware is the term that is used for this type of parasite and although its sort of like a virus it isn't caught by any anti-virus software. I downloaded a free program from lavasoft called Ad-Aware (an anti- ad / spyware purging program) see more info below.

I was infected with N-Case (180solutions), Ezula (TopText) and some more of these adware programs...
Do a look at your control panel then add remove progtams and I bet that there are some programs running on your machine that you didn't realise were there. And if you try to remove them you go through the procedure and they come right back up since the uninstall is really a bad joke- infact some of these programs tell you that to unistall you must down load the uninstall program- don't be fooled since they are just loading more BS on your machine.

Take a look at these sites for more info:

I downloaded ad-adware from here for free:
http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-2

I used this freeware program called Ad-Aware to rid my box of these programs but as oldsaw-addict put it these programs probably only disable the function of the program but there are still in there somewhere or have made other irreversable changes to some of the system files.

Spyware and Adware

You have been talking about adware. I would recommend two programs. First is AD-AWARE, you have talked about this one. I would also recommend one called SPYBOT. Both will find and facilitate the removal of both spyware and adware. Each can miss somethings but both will get almost everything on a system. A google search on the name will get you to the right place. Install, update and run both. Then about once a week run them.
