I don't know about out west Bushler but on the east coast we get Spruce Budworm and it's extremely nasty. It's a naturally occuring phenom and I sure hope that's not what you got. Good luck. Here's some of the info for your area.

Out here, Spruce Budworm goes for true firs and Douglas-fir more than Spruce.
It is a problem on the Eastern side of the Cascades. Then they burn.

The paper mill here is set to go down for 6 weeks because of low demand. Pulp wood is down to close to half the price of a year ago.
Don't look good to me.

Things are getting worse here. Pulp is piling up at the port because the Asian buyers and the carriers are running into credit problems. Major construction projects are on hold too.
We are close to retirement and it ain't looking pretty.Hoping the cycle will turn around in a year (two at the most)but who knows.

Myrtle, Zod., thanks for the links. Looks like I have weevils. The damage pics are similar. I'll prune as recommended. The trees are growing fast, they're on a Site II/III, and should be 35' in a few years.
