i was just looking at some bigger used saws on ebay ,,an wondering.
if a new say,, 394 was used up,, running a saw mill. would it still be purty like some o them saws.
for real. i mean it dont seem to me ,,it would spend much time in the bed of a pickup an such.. which is where most of the scratches an such come from,,i would think..
just thinking,,no offense intended to u fellas running mills now.
thinking a little about doing it myself.
price o lumber keeps going up ,,i know i am..

Are you asking if milling beats up saws? Damagewise I think less, no pinching or having trees fall on it, etc.

Motorwise though, the saw gets a good workout. The saw is run full throttle for minutes at a time. Is this bad? I don't really know, but I think if your jetting isn't right, one 3 minute cut will do more damage then one hundred 10 second cuts.

Was talking to a husky dealer at a show and he has one customer been thru 2 pistons on a 3120 milling. He claims you have to set the carb blubbering rich to avoid piston troubles.
Whats the real scoop?

no it just seems strange to see these big saws ,,some with skip chain,,on ebay. i just wondered if there mite be a little more to be considered than if it runs an looks clean. that would normally be the things id be interested in if i wanted a used saw.
frank its easy to see why u would want it fuel rich for mill running.

Tony- Milling is VERY hard on chainsaws. You are correct in your assumption that the saw may still look good on the outside but have a lot of wear and tear on the inside. But mostly it comes down to the operator's habits, if they're the type that beat on equipment then it looks like crap no matter what kind of cutting they are doing.

I have kinda quit looking at chainsaws on Ebay...I've bought a few and I sheepishly admit I've been rode hard a couple of times. Couple of OK deals, too, but I have NEVER gotten a really decent buy.

That said, I have, at times, asked the sellers questions about items. I still won't say I'm a smart shopper, but at least have had the opportunity to shy away based on the replies (or lack!) I've gotten. a deal or two I've gotten were from estate liquidators whose sellers were pretty much in the dark about how to market some of their stuff, but everybody else figured it out too, and forced the price up pretty high.

I also (maybe wrongly) look a little closely at items from certain areas. For example, what would an average joe from Mpls be doing with a 3120? There aren't lots of trees here large enough to require that size saw for felling, so what would it be used for?

There are not too many trees here that warrant a large saw but that has not stopped me from accumulating quite a collection of 90-120 cc saws. Sure I do not need the 3120 much but it is quite a little saw with my 15 inch bar on it. It called being a fanatic and they are located in every state even MN.
