Dustytools came over to the house today and we had a grand time playing with the saws. We cut a few cookies, and milled a little sycamore with his 394(5?) and my 361. Every Sycamore board we cut split lengthwise as we were milling it unfortunately. The crack was chasing the saw up the log. It was interesting to see how his rails worked and now I know how to make a set from the unistrut he gave me at the Ohio GTG. His was aluminum tho, and I expect it'll be a LOT lighter than the steel strut is going to be.

And before ya beat me up too bad, I had my PPE connected to a Klingon Cloaking Device. I was actually encased in 1/2" steel plate and was looking through eye slits. Hot it was in there.

Cool, looks like you had fun!

More importantly you, you are close enough to someone with a big saw...

... I think I really need one... but I hate to spend the cash without taking one for a test drive!

BTW, What a difference between the two 361s. The port job and the muffler mod are gonna be in my saws future, most likely when the warranty expires. Have any luck selling the boat today Ian?

Have any luck selling the boat today Ian?

Nope, not at all. I think I'm going to have to break down and do a little cosmetic work to it, a little paint on the wooden floors, or maybe glue in some astroturf to make it prettier. The whole time he was here, he was saying that I was asking a fair price, the boat was worth it and that he wasn't there to haggle me down, but at the same time, and sometimes in the same breath, he was trying to haggle me down. It was the father of a guy at work, and I posted my $1k price at work as 'Firm' whereas when I put it on craigslist, I bumped it up $400, expecting to haggle down to $1k or $1100. I'm sure if I had put $1100 on it at work, he would have offered me what I wanted. As it is, he offered me $900 as he was leaving. Nope, can't sell a boat for 900 when I bought it for $1500 and then replaced the transom and had the carb rebuilt.

Bummer. I think that I forgot the filing jig that you gave me. Hopefully the Mrs. isnt looking over your shoulder reading this.

so Ian, did you get the 361 running better or are you just getting used to running it now, I remember you said it wasn't much more than stock.

did the filing help or just tweaking the carb?

After tweaking the carb a little and lowering the rakers a bit, it's considerably better. Yesterday wasn't a really good comparison from a 'feel' standpoint tho, because I was running RSC that was my first hacked up attempt to grind some race chain characteristics into a round chisel chain. How well did I do? The teeth are all different lengths, I eyeballed lopping off the back of the each tooth for chip clearance and they aren't even. I ground off the front of each raker to widen the gap between it and the tooth in front of it, and several times I slipped and the grinder went over the top, shortening the raker a bit so now the rakers are uneven. On top of that, it was my only loop of RSC and I didn't do any timed cuts before I took the grinder to it, so I don't know what it was doing before. Did I make the chain faster? I have no idea, but it is much more aggressive than it used to be. I think Terry was running RSC3. It was Stihl round chisel but had a funny "double" depth gauge. We should have taken the time to swap out bar and chain and do some timed cuts on a level playing field, but the old saying about 20/20 hindsight comes into play here.
