i'm a fool (for a good documentary)...
Me too. Last night I flicked to pbs during the commericals of the basketball game, and wound up missing the game. It was a very photogenic documentary on research in tree canopies; this woman put cameras all over, even in hornbill nests, and documented the many life forms interacting in the treetops. To do all this, she had to be a great climber--impressive.

Not sure if it was History Channel or Discovery Channel, but yes, ... they did have a Scandanavian "spider-like" logging vehicle (spider-like because it only had six legs). Original developed to harvest trees from peat bogs. It automatically senses ground bearing pressure and is able to determine if it is sinking so it repositions its footings. Really cool.
They also talked about the mass harvesting up until the 1990's and briefly went into deforestation down in Brazil. "Nature's Lungs" was a term they used.
Also had some neat ideas for log transportation, like the log raft and chains and wooden frame struture... over 1000 ft long. Phenomenal idea.
Andreas Stihl, inventor of the chainsaw... etc etc was a very good hour of tv. One of the very few I would say would be worth watching.

History channel showed "Logging Tech" last night once again. Just happened to catch the last half. Its in the History Channel listings under their "Modern Marvels" series, but I can't find when they'll show it next. Some very nice footage of older saws in action!

Nov. 30 at 9:00 ET !!!

Heads up for anyone who wants to see this. History Channel is scheduled to show this again on Nov. 30 at 9:00 eastern. There may be additional times scheduled, but I just ran across this one so far. This episode will be followed by "The lumberyard" which may also be of interest.
