Does anyone know what Ken, Dennis and the others actually do to the saws? I'm not looking to reveal any trade secrets, but what are muffler modifications? I'm sure removing the muffler completely would give performance gains. What else do these guys do to boost cutting? What is porting...?
 
Hi there, as an acomplished saw modifier, I rarely part with any imformation about scratching jugs up with a dremel, however, its even harder to get these other guys to share their knowledge.
To be honest, just do a search here and you will come up with reams of info about the subject, most of which I told these other guys about, even though they dont wish to endear themselves to me, however, it is their lose, I am sure. I also make race chain.

I have a 36cc green " WILD THING " made by Poulan that is slightly under powered and needs performance enhancing, do you think you can work your magic on my saw with those fancy tools of yours and make it perform like a wild banshee, as I have two 36" oaks to cut down.

In anticipation of your reply, :confused:

Oh! The tool specialist at Wal-Mart told me this was a real good saw. :cool:
 
Husky, pro line or not i would rather use a hand saw than a poulan!!!:D
 
Please forgive my skepticism, but I’m a little hesitant to spend more for the modification than I did for the saw, especially when I don’t know what they’re doing to it. I had a handgun modified and spent more on modifications than I did on the initial cost of the gun. However, I knew exactly what the gunsmith was doing to it. I’m sure there are trade secrets among gunsmiths, but they tell me, basically, what they will do. All I really know about chainsaw modifications is from this forum and one e-mail reply each from Ken and Dennis: They do something to the muffler, something called “porting” and it comes back with 30% gains. I don’t even know if “gains” refers to horsepower, cutting speed or some other measurement. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

People are more apt to help someone who is willing to help himself first rather than expect to be spoon fed. There is literally volumes of info on the mods that these experts do to saws and the results of their top shelf work. Your skepticism is unfounded if you haven't looked around good and hard at the techniques and results discussed here.

What kind of saw do you have? Or what kind of saw were you thinking of modifying? What are planning on using the saw for? Why does a modified saw interest you at all? All of these things matter(at least from everything I've read here) when it comes to mods. Some saws are more worthwhile while others don't seem to have much hope of substantial gains. If you have a particular saw in mind, do a search here using that as a parameter and I bet you can get excellent answers to all of your questions.

There is more than you wanted to know and enough of what you need on this site.

I suggest you to search for muffler mods.

Since you are a new user to this site people are trying to help you by giving you guidance on finding the answer.

This topic has been discussed dozens of times. Your question has been asked at least a dozen times. I even asked the same question and GYPO-LOGGER posted pictures on this site on muffler modifications. A step by step guide.

As far as the mechanics of you doing the mod verses someone else. Are you mechanically inclined? If so you could do a muffler mod yourself. Can you build an engine or modify the components? If so you might be able to modify the ports/stroke duration etc.

First off let me say that I am not privy to iside info on what Dennis or ken exactly do as far as port numbers etc. However tuning a two stroke is not a black art as some would have you believe. This is especially true with the advent of cheap engine simulation software.
I would imagine that ken and Dennis start a saw job by determing what the customer wants, be it a race saw or a woods saw. After that determination is made they would disasemble the saw and measure things like deck height, squish clearance, and calculate things like transfer area , blow down timing and exhuast time area. After the stock parameters are measured they would decide on how best to approach porting the cylinder. Things like peak power, peak torque rpm and powerband width are a consideration when deciding what port timing numbers to put in a motor. Next they would use a lath to turn down the cylinder base to tighten the squish clearance up. After the squish is within spec they will actually begin grinding the ports to change the port timing with die grinding tools and a assortment of differant tool heads. Once the porting is complete the muffler would be derestricted by adding extra ports or installing a dual port stock cover. The motor would them be put back together and the carb and ignition timing would be fine tuned/optimized to the saws new state of tune.
Of course this is a gross generalization, but it gives you a good idea whats invloved.
 
I guess skeptical is too strong a word. I haven’t formed my opinion yet, so maybe I should have said I’m inquisitive. The saw I am considering modifying is a 335xpt. I am not mechanical enough to do the work myself, so I want to find the best person to do the modifications on a small saw. I wrote one guy who was honest enough to tell me he didn’t do the small saws because they didn’t see enough gains to justify the cost. Others promise big increases. Walker, at less than half the cost of some others expects to gain one full horsepower, which is incredible for a little saw that Husky only rates at 2.2 hp. If my math is right, that is a 45% increase. Does this sound right to you guys? I hear that you get what you pay for, but Dennis only expects a 30% gain. Is he just being more humble?
