just curious if anybody had suggestions to get more power out of a 440 without jeopardizing reliability. i just purchased the saw 2 days ago and haven't had a chance to use it yet. but later to day it should get a work out .let me know.

you just bought it, haven't run it yet.and already you know you need more power?
is it new or used?

it's new
i traded my 038 in on it, the dealer gave me $15 less than what i paid for it 7 years ago when i bought it off him. I was pretty happy over that. :blob2:

Run it for a little while to "break it in" Then do a muffler mod and set the carb a little richer, pick up a high flow air filter from baileys, throw on a 3/8-8 sprocket with 20" B&C, and it'll impress you. Whatcha planning to use it for?
Sounds like you got a good deal, I personally favor the 046 over the 044, but there's prob not much difference.

i was curious on what do they come factory, (sprocket size ) i run a twenty inch bar on my 460 most of the time 90% and a 28 inch bar 10% should i stay with the factory sprocket or get another size ,,, it does have a muffler mod done . thanks

I'd wondered what Tim Allen has been doing since his show went off the air. :)

You'll have to look at your sprocket, it's stamped. Most I've seen is 3/8-7 stock on 46's, but that might just be a local dealer thing, too.
If you're running a 20" on a modded 46, you've got plenty of power left over to gear up the chain drive to an 8 pin sprocket. But depending on your bar, and how much you've stretched your chain, you may need to add a link to get it to fit. I'd run the 7 until you're ready for a chain, then the sprocket rim is @ $4, and get your chain with 73 drivers instead of 72. Its a simple E-clip to swap sprockets, if needed for the big bar and hard wood.
Assuming you're using a rim sprocket setup, and not spur of course.

On certain bars going up from a 7 to 8 tooth you do not need an increase in chain drive link count. Try it first and see!

True, the only time I needed an extra link was if I was using an Oregon bar. My stihl and GBs all swap no prob. Go figure.

when you say muffler mod what exactally does that intale I'm handy but new to mods on chain saws, and any diagrams or instructions would be greatly appreciated
Thanx lance

I have an 046 project, and I am awaiting the piston and cyllinder balieys backordered. I bought the Max flo kit for it. It is kind of dorky looking withe the rain cover on it. Hopefully it will pay off with performance. I just did not want to dry up my bank by buying the whole oem setup from stihl. Any suggestions on setting the carb for the filter when I get it running?

splinter ,mods have really improved .. to the point that these modifyers can just do a better job,due to what they have learned by experience and from other modifyers..
id advise save some time and get better results.. let a good modfyer do it rite..
dan, dave,ed, etc ,can change you saw so much ,best lettum do one an try an see what they did..jmo
ps theres others here that can do it well also ,i would assume..

how much of a gain would you expect from a air breather kit from baily's.. like i said i run a 460 with a muffler mod . would it be worth the money .
