There there was this 'mass' also but it looks different than the other....

All taken from Spruce trees on an acreage (Canadian prairies). Trees are all approx 20 to 30 years old. Any opinions and/or advice would be appreciated.

While I cannot ID that mess (partly because I am largely unfamiliar with pests common to your area, as I mostly work with hardwoods) I would suggest sending copies of your pictures to your nearest university entomology department. I know here in the US we normally can also obtain the services of county extension agents who are likely to know common problem in the area and what kind sample to take, and where to send them.

That pupae seen in the last photo should help with ID of that insect, unfortunately not guaranteed to be the one causing all the damage.
