I just bought a Gehl AL540 for my mostly residential tree business. My partner already owns a nice beaver squeezer log grapple that I can easily hook to my machine and use, but my question is, what advantage does the log grapple have over a rugged heavy duty grapple bucket? Thanks for your thoughts.

A root rake grapple works great if you've got debris scattered everywhere. You can push it into a pile or if there are a bunch of smaller piles. I like a dangle grapple for tight access places. You can skid out small trees or large tops

Log grapple is better for logs, skidding, lifting, etc.

Grapple bucket works better for cleaning up and carrying smaller brush and sometimes chips from stump grinding.

I run a 540 with a rotating grapple. Best money maker I've had. I've done jobs bid for 2 days in half a day by dragging with the machine. You can't do that with a brush grapple. If you grab a top and try to drag it sideways you don't get far before it hits something.

Bucket/brush grapples definitely have their place but 99% of the time I use my rotating grapple and leave the bucket grapple at the yard.

I just recently bought a new avant 420, wow what a game changer. As the initial cost was up there I wanted to get just one attachment with it for now so ended up getting a grapple bucket. If you're looking for one do it all attachement this serves us very well. I was going to pick up a bmg but after using this for a couple months I see no need. We did a planting in my front yard using 22 yards of soil and 10 eight foot Norway spruces. I had all the soil moved and all the trees in place in an hour and a half. Its so easy to grab the large root balls. I can grab large logs and brush piles with ease, long ways or sideways with no help from anyone having to position a grapple or the debris. To be fair ive never used a dangle grapple but ive seen lots of videos and did a bunch of research. I wanted one do it all attachment to get us started with the new machine For me at least, I really don't see a need for another attachment.
