I have a 2006 Vermeer SC60TX stump grinder. Is anybody having any motor problems out of the 60hp CAT motor. The motor is a CAT3024CT model. Any feedback would be great. THANKS

All of the small CAT Diesels are made by Perkins, and short of the turbo I think it is the same engine used in the SC505 and TX50. What engine problems are you having? The 50 Horsepower in my SC505 has 1,450 hours on it and other than a tune up and a set of injectors not much has gone wrong with it.

I bought my machine brand new with only two hours on it and the motor locked up with only 525hrs on it. All maint. was done as recommended. Vermeer nor CAT would stand behind it, they just said it was out of warranty by 18 months. The Vermeer tec. thought it might had sheered off the oil pump. You are right though Perkins and Cat are the same the only difference between the 50hp and the 60hp is a turbocharger. Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble.

It is a 2006 and is already 18 months out of warranty?? Only a 1 year warranty on the motor?? Seems short.

Took delivery Jan. 2006 had a two year or 2000hrs. warranty and motor locked up in July of 2009. So it was approx 18 months out of warranty. Engines don't go bad just sitting and it only had 525 hrs on it. It should have been just getting broke in.

Define locked up. Have you pulled the injectors to see if it is hydraulically locked from a leaking injector? Do you have diesel fuel in the oil? Has the head been pulled to check cylinders. In other words what created the siezure? It is not always a major problem, has anyone examined the clutch area to see if something in there is locked up? I have seen saws locked up over a loose bolt comming in contact with the flywheel. Assume nothing.

Vermeer put a oil pressure gague on it and it had less than 10lbs. of oil pressure. It did not sound very smooth either. Vermeer thought that maybe the oil pump shered off. Who knows because every mechanic said it would be cheaper to replace it than to go into it and repair it. So this winter I have the task of going into it. Thanks

does anyone know anything about the deutz diesel engines on these stump grinders I had a deutz guy take a look at it and a couple other people they all say replace the motor. but motor runs fine just burns oil actually quite a bit of oil but it still has the hp. they say it is not worth puting a ring kit in it cause it would cost 70% of what a new motor would cost. Has anyone had one of these deutz motors rebuilt (ring Kit). Also it is hard to find somone that will work on them because of the machineing but do you always have to get them machined or can you just slap new rings in it. the motor is already a reman and has about 400 hours. any suggestions
Thanks guys

I had mine on my 672 rebuilt by local mechanic. I couldn't afford to let the Deutz dealer do it. I had it bored new pistons/rings along with rod and main bearings for $2,000.

Problem with a rebuild is no warranty. I would investigate the cost of an engine and get a good estimate on the rebuild before you start. I know plenty of people that start a rebuild and end up wishing they would have just bought a new engine.

Maybe Deutz has reman engines available??

I have had the cylinders off duetz engines. They are not that complicated. Oem parts are pricey, You can actually just slip the jugs off the top and re ring them without removing the pan or rod bearings.

If it was a decent rebuild it shuold just be broke in at 400 hours. Have someone check the valve seals to see if you are pulling oil through the valve guides. My air cooled diesel has 2,400 hours and still doesnt use hardly any oil.

How much oil are you using? When I worked for a Duetz dealer a few years ago
they said you could use up to .5% of oil compared to fuel.

Example for every 100 gallons of fuel they allow 2 quarts of oil use.

ya I am using a lot more than that. I would guess around 1 quart for a small stump. the longer i run it the less oil I use like once it warms up I dont use as much oil It is weird. It also smokes really bad when you first start it for about 10min then it stops and it seems like it stops burning as much oil. I dont understand it cause if the rings were bad it would burn oil constent and smoke all the time. maybe I should just get it rebuilt or sell anybody want it 2001 carlton 4400-4 total hours on machine is 800 reman motor about400hrs new pockets and teeth converted from poly belt to belts with new belts duel wheel package sell it for 11,000
