Generally I’d suggest you use what the service manual recommends. It’s worth mentioning, clamshell engines require a gap filler, motoseal is for machined flat surfaces. If you don’t apply enough you won’t fill the gap, if you apply too much it may not fully cure. I have seen it used successfully, but I have had it fail a pressure test after 24 hours.

Motoseal is what i use most of the time for flat flanges.
Permatex no#1 is what i use for clamshell engine that stuff sets hard as concrete and can handle anything.
Permatex no#2 is great substitute for dirko.

Whatever I have on hand, typically its honda bond, permatex ultra black/grey, rightstuff, toyotas version. They all work, the trick is learning whats enough but not too much and allowing it to cure 24 hours above 75 degrees and really cleaning the surfaces of any/all oils including the oil from our skin.

I jumped on the Dirko bandwagon when I re-slugged my first Stihl MS290. Clamshell engine. After the fact, I looked up the specs on it. It's just high temp silicone with little to no fuel resistance. O well.... it worked!

Is Dirko resistant to fuel?
No. Dirko is unfortunately not resistant to fuel. For use with contact with fuels, we recommend our sealants Curil T2 or El-Liq 73 and El-Liq 74.
