Hi everyone,

I just bought a 1993 F-350 chip truck on ebay. The truck is located in MI, and I was just wondering what I needed as far as licensing, insurance etc. to make the road trip to NY legally? I assume many of you have been in a similar situation before. Thanks a lot.

Its not a "big truck " so I dont think that other than temp tag you need anything to drive back to NY. I used to work for trucking company and we needed permits to drive home used semis we bought, never did F350 though.

i had mine shipped threw d.a.s. from Texas to Md. it was about $1000.00. be carful feebay is buyer beware!!! the dmv should give u a cardboard temp tag good fer 10 days if the truck is inspected and road worthy.

I use dealer tags. However, if it is a commercial vehicle, you will want to make sure you have a valid cdl and a commercial vehicle log book. I got a stiff warning once when bringing a truck across state lines and not having a log book filled out for the trip. I had never driven a commercial vehicle across state lines before so I didn't have a clue about needing one. My state doesn't require them for local work.

What about a DOT#?

The truck does not require a CDL to drive, not that it would be a big deal, because I have a class "A" anyways. However, it will have commercial plates once I get it here. I think that it is about 11000# GVW.
Another question while we are on the topic, where I live, most of the trucks have DOT numbers. Do you guys have any experience with getting one? I think that mine will need one. Thanks.

How does one buy a truck he has never seen or heard run? I mean what if you get there and you find its not what you thought? WHat if it breaks down on the way back? What if it was just a scam? How do you know these things?
I hope it works out if that is what you want but don't you think there is TONS of risk involved? Sounds like a long way for a 350, good luck.

Dan,
I have seen pics of the truck, and they look very good. The truck is an F350 4x4, with a 9' steel chip box. My brother is an ASE certified mechanic, and he will be going with me to pick it up. Actually, we are taking the truck to the shop where he works in Ohio first, and then after it is checked out, we will take it to NY. I have spoken with the seller on the phone, and everything seems to be in order. He had good feedback on ebay, and is a fellow tree man. I admit it does make me a little nervous not seeing it, but I can't really justify a trip to MI just to look at a truck. Thanks.

I guess MI ain't THAT far. Sounds like you have a simular truck as me. Lets see the pics.

I saw my truck on Ebay too. I just called the number and asked what he wanted. HE said the truck was in GREAT shape and the usuall " I would drive this anywhere". When I got there I told him he was an idiot if he did.
What they called new front brakes was new pads on worn out and badly scored rotors, the front end need new ball joints all over and tons of other little things.

Hey swing by on your way through. What city does your brother work in? Is it near Cleveland. Good luck with it.

Truck

Dan,
The guy did mention that the brakes need to be bled before driving. He has been pretty honest with me. Aside from that he said the truck is fine. How do you post pics? Rookie, my brother's shop is in Lima, OH. Thanks.

Yeah, that's a nice little truck. I was also wondering ; did you pay for yet? And if you did can you get out of it if when you see the item you bought and decide its not worth it or for other reason. I am not talking about this truck in particular but what happens in those cases on Ebay.

Payment

I have sent the guy his deposit, but I have not yet wired him the money. Many ebayers have an "if your not happy, you don't pay" policy, but I have no reason to believe that I will be unhappy. Out of curiosity, what do you think I paid for it?

John,
I that was a pretty good guess. I paid 3900, and I was the only bidder. Haha. It looks like it will be a nice truck.

I bought my BMW like that last year off ebay. I took a one way to Florida and drove it home. Saved me 4k off buying local. I have been happy with the car. I have put $300 into repairs in a little over a year. In That time I have put almost 30k miles on it. My thought was that someone bid $100 less then me. If I didn't like it when I got home I would just resell it and not loose much. Nice chip truck. I have my eye on a truck he locally. It's a 2000 f-450 4x4 Stick shift diesel. Has a flatbed dump with a goose neck ball. 93k miles looks great. Has under bed tool boxes. 1-owner. I'm hoping to get it for 11k. we'll see.
