Had a guy bring me his MS 170 yesterday saying it was not working right. I found it had a crankshaft seal leaking. I called up my local Stihl dealer thats 40 miles away and was told he had them in stock.
I take off on the trip, only to get pulled over for speeding by a not very understanding state trooper. Indiana just passed a law July 1 on seatbelts for people who drive pickup trucks, you now must use them, before you didn't, I never have, but after my two tickets that I got for speeding and a seatbelt violation, do try to remember to buckle up.

I get to the Stihl dealer and tell the old boy behind the counter that I'm there for the crankshaft seals. He grabs a couple quarter sized, inexpensive looking seals and hands me a bill for 37.00$. It wasn't a good day, and I never did find any gold in them thar seals. I can only hope the Ms170 owner can understand his 250.00$ repair bill for his 165.00$ saw.:bang:

I think I paid 11.00 ea for the seals on my 180c a month ago

.

Most of the crank seals I get are between 7.50 and 12.50 ea. for the Dolmars ,Stihl and Husky's.

Haven't been pulled over in 16 years......

Sorry about your luck.
It's funny how Indiana alowed no seatbelts in Pick up trucks all these years.

For seals that's not too bad. When I worked on the Slope I carried a couple of seals for an LM1500 turbine that ran around $1k each. I held a bearing for another big turbine that was $15k. Yeah, I know it's not a chainsaw, but heck, crank seals for my Polaris XCR-800 run about $30 each too.

Bummer 'bout the tickets, but you know the Socialists, they know what's better for you than you do. Remember the Joisey guv that ordered his driver to drive 90 mph and wasn't wearing a seatbelt, against the law? Do what I say, not as I do.

There are two different seals for the MS170.. one if you take the pan off ($8.65) - and the other which is inserted with the engine complete ($18.25)..

Sorry about your speeding tickets. I know the feeling as I drive approx 50.000 miles a year. No way you can do that distance here without one or two tickets a year. I feel like robbed when I get one. :chainsaw:

I just bought 2 crank bearings + seals for my Husky hedge trimmer : 51 euros (67 $). I did hesitate to take them, but the trimmer was still too good to throw away. I hope you feel better now. Shared sorrow is half the sorrow. :(

Now that just really makes my day, thanks ultra:laugh:Next you'll be telling me got of with a warning on your last traffic violation.

75 in a 55 and not even a written warning. Being in a company truck helped.

It's the nature of the beast. Critical parts cost allot.

Meh I trash more dollars in equipment than that at work every day cause I don't like the way it is treating me at that point in time. Either spend toundands of dollars or lose millions because of one faulty part. Your choice, even if it is on a smaller scale. I only repair equipment if I have the time or patience.

If it is going to cost 250 to repair I would be pissed. It is a trow away consumer saw for a reason.

Cross over the river and you will find things a bit different. No warnings, no BS , just a expensive day. If you do that a few times a year it will be no more legal driving. I used to love those low cost Iowa tickets.

Bill

Lucky you were not pulled in Virginia, new laws went into effect july 1 for VA residents, speeding 15+ over will cost about $1500 now. I have family that is in law enforcement told me he had to give out 2 tickets for excessive speed and no seatbelt july 2, will cost the driver over 2k :jawdrop: in tickets plus court fees. He was going to give a warning but the driver was a wisea$$ so he started writing. Talk about a bad day.
