I did my own muffler mod on my ms-310 and would like to know if i should do anything with my chain oiler. I think my chain and bar run kinda hot but not for sure, it does steam alot of the time.(bucking fire wood) Would like some ideas. Thanks alot. (16in bar)

If it is smoking alot I think that might be a sharpening or a tightness issue. Also a 20 inch bar seems more practacle for a saw of that size personally.

16 inch bar works great on the 310.. or any high powered saw. No one says to have to run a long bar... I run a short bar most of the time I'm doing firewood, even on my 361, and mount longer bars as required. Less weigh and great cutting.

As for the pump, yes, definitely check the chain tension etc. The 310 has the higher output pump (of that series saw) and should never smoke on the bar. Take off the bar and side cover, start the saw and see if oil pours out of the small hoke at the TOP between the bar studs. Not a "splutter, but a nice constant stream at medium RPM. If it does, look at the tiny oil hole in the bar and make sure it isn't blocked. If you've turned the bar over and not cleaned out the hole, it's blocked.

Also adjust the oiler for more output if it can be done. I set all my saws to max output. Had the dealer do it to my MS310 before delivery so don't recall where the adjust screw is on it.

I got a new chain and the chain isnot to tight (i think). I wounder if the oil i am using is junk. You mite think im dumb but i use wal-mart chain oil, its cheap and i think it works fine. But if some one knows how to up the oil pump i would like to try it some. thanks guys and gals for all your help.

The oil won't matter. Look on the bottom of the saw and you see a hole with an oil symbol. Use a small screw driver to adjust the output... It's all in your user manual.

Oh did not know it is in the book. LOL.. thanks alot

I would not use the walmart brand oil that is not helping your problem I would try the poulan brand oil they have at walmart it is alot thicker then the cheap walmart kind. The walmart kind is just a 30wt oil.

I will stop using the wal-mart kind and i turned up my pump last night and going to see if it helps this morning in some 8/4 frame stock (junk) thanks alot for your time guys....

Intell my 460 gets here, I have been on occation runnung 36" of bar on my 310, and it gets along allright, just keep the oil to the max!

It should take about a tank of oil with every tank of gas.

Steem will come off of any chain, heavy cutting will brong a chain and bar up to that temp.
The lack of lube is just seconds away from some real heat, like a smoken blue hot bar and chain.

What did you do to the muff? if I may ask?

Well im not to smart, but i tryed my best to muffler mod it. I took the 3 bolts out and took it off then cut a square out of the muffler so you can see the cylinder. (just up from the 2 little holes in the muffler) I took the plate that held the screen and cut it to just hold the screen on and to see the cylinder. I got it from this forum, it really helped it alot(they got pics how to). I took the limiters out of the carb and had to tune it up some so it wouldnt over rev and lean out. If any one knows some other stuff to do to it i would like to know.

First things first. Do you have a tool to clean the saw dust out of the rails on your bar? Do you use it everyday to clean the rails of debris? A hot bar is sometimes caused by sawdust filling the rails and blocking the oil hole on the bar. It should be part of the daily maintenance of turning the bar over when you use the saw, clean the dirt out of the rails and check if you can daylight thru the oil hole. Chains like lubrcation and need a clean oiler hole in the bar to get oil where it belongs. The advice you're getting did not start with the basics of the problems you may incounter. If your oiler is pumping the next step is to check and make sure the oil can get to the chain through the oil hole in the bar. These holes can be drilled out for more flow but normally work well if they are cleaned daily as part of your filp the bar over routine. So, if the guys ask if you're going to make all the cuts today standing on your head because your bar's on upsidedown you know they don't clean theirs often and you shouldn't let your saws play with their saws and pick bad habits. :D :D
