If you are interested in a MS 361 check the number on the muffler. Muffler 1135 03 has a bigger exhaust opening than number 1135 01. I have used two 361's with 01 muffler and they would not cut with my MS 260(muffler mods only). Just bought a 361 with 03 muffler and it is much stronger. One of the mechanics said he had an notice from Stihl about the mufflers and he recommended the saw with the 1135 03 muffler. Glad I listened.

Hello Stihl Crazy,

can you make pics of the differences, that the two mufflers can be identified ?

I got a new but on the CE label year 2003 MS361. I allready wondered that I have a sprocket ring. The calalog would list a fixed sprocket.

Best regards
Christian

Hello Christian,

Sorry but I can't show pictures ; no camera. Take the top cover off and look on the muffler (starter side, just behind brake handle). Mine has a small Stihl logo and name with the number 1135 03 just below it. Of the three 361's I have used this is the only one that would cut with my 357 Husky. Hope this helps.

Why not just take a dremel and gut the inside out and open it up. While your at it get rid of the screen.

Because when it gets here Marky I will be using the foredom on it, Art put a weeks running on her before sending it

Well Ed that's a different story.

What do you think of the Husky 262. I juat happen to grab one at a good price and was thinking about porting this one.

I got around to checking my new MS361, and just my luck, the muffler has "1135 01" stamped on it. Now I need to try to explain to my dealer why I want to replace the muffler on my brand new saw. I can just imagine the look on their faces. How much do they cost, anway? Any other ideas on where/how I can get the "1135 03", or even a document from Stihl that supports why I want to replace it (service bulletin?)?

The 1135/03 mufler is only availlabe for Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The USA muffler is 1135/01 - thanks you EPA. Anyone from Canada got both to measure?

There was a prior muffler 1135/00. No idea what that was though...

Looks like I need to make a trip to CA, and have an unfortunate mishap involving my muffler, thus requiring service. Of course, there's the little problem with the fact that I probably can't get a chainsaw through customs. Oh well, now I at least know more than I did this morning.

Thanks.

I'm sure you probably could get it through customs, you just gotta dismantle it and take it up with you saying its going to someone up there.

Sorry, but that`s the last thing that you would want to do even if it were true. Getting saws through customs is no problem at all but you must be emphatic if questioned, that the saw is returning to The States with you. If you so much as even say that you are gifting anything to anyone in Canada, you will be expected to pay duty and possibly be responsible for brokerage fees depending on the value of the item and the complexity(and your ability to complete) the brokerage forms.

Whenever a saw is shipped from the US to Canada for repair it should be clearly marked "Warranty repair and return".

Despite having differant part numbers all 361 mufflers are identical internaly. I know because I have cut apart both part numbers in order to gut and mod. These mufflers are very restrictive. The worst I have ever seen. The outlet is 3/8" or smaller, but the exhaust most snake through the spark arrestor assembly before it can empty the outlet. The slot it must pass through before entering the 3/8 outlet is very small.
Stock this saw is a pig, but very smooth. Open up the muffler and its a whole new animal.
