MS 361 not oiling?

I have a two year old ms 361 that is using very little bar oil. I'll run through a full tank of gas, and about half of the oil tank. I've felt the bar a couple of times after running it and the bar is really heating up, so I know not enough bar oil is getting to the bar. Any ideas?

Have you adjusted the oiler?

Yes, I have played around with the adjustment for the oiler, and have it in the full oil position. I forgot to mention, that this saw has been in the shop for the same thing 9 months ago, and they fixed it. Now its doing the same thing again.

What did that shop do the last time it happened?

Sounds like you are getting contaminates in the oil tank.

I just pulled out the receipt from the saw shop, and it states that they "ran the saw and oil came out ok" . So, Im thinking they never really fixed the problem in the first place?

Thats how my 361 was .I put a stock 460 pump piston P/N 41128 647 0606 andstock 460 control bolt P/N 41128 647 4806 in the 361 pump housing that fixed it. I'm not 100% sure of these P/N

How many tanks have you run? There was another thread about this - they found a piece of plastic in the pick up strainer - may have been from a jug of bar oil. I run mine full open and go though a little better than half a tank of oil per tank of fuel. Never see excessive heat or chain stretch.

I've run 10-15 tanks through it. Im really careful when I refill, to make sure sawdust& dirt is clear from the openings before filling.

want to get into the 361 oil-er issues of my well hated ms361.

But while your having issues with your oiler I would go with the

high output oil pump as used on the Australian 066 models. Parts cost is about $39 (list), or, you can just put in a new pump for $68 and sell the old one.
New Control bolt - 1128 647 4802
New Piston - 1122 647 0602

This is not the way I went but after the ms361 was repaired with stock oil pump, Oil use to fuel is about 1 tank to 1 tank.

I will be going with the Australian 066 pump this winter and hopefully be done with it for a few years.

Why is this pump going out on a two year old saw? It pumps some oil, but not enough.

I just found more part numbers I guess we need some clarification on the correct part number for the ms 361

Both of these would be tough to modify while maintaining the required surface finish for continuous contact operation...
You can just order the 460 FULL WRAP piston and adjuster screw. Not much point in getting the standard 460 parts. This upgrade applies equally to the 361 and 441 pumps.
Like with the 660, the piston is modified in the end cup and shoulder, and the control bolt has a greater eccentricity.
Give your dealer the following part numbers:
Entire HO 460R pump - 1128 640 3250 - $84.50
OR
Upgrade parts:
Piston - 1128 647 0602 - $26.20
Control bolt - 1128 647 4803 - $3.90

1/2 a tank or so of oil per tank of gas is normal on the 361. If your bar isn't burning the paint or other abnormal wear, it's not an issue. If you want more, as referenced above, put in the WRAP 460 oil pump parts.

BTW.. The 361 oiler puts out 91% of the Standard (not Wrap) 460 oiler. Why slightly less? because they use shorter bars. It's in another thread, but from memory (so check..) the 361 is about 15.5cc/min, the 460 17 and the 460 wrap up to 24.

Got a new 361 a month ago. My other 2 with the oiler set on the lowest setting use a tank of oil to a tank of gas. The new one is set full open and goes 2 tanks of gas to 1 of oil. This problem is not an isolated issue. Either pump specs were changed or there is a run of poor pumps in saws.

We went thru a similar issue a number of years ago with crank seals for 026. A high # of seal failures over a 2 year period. Offical "talk" was user abuse. Finally it was changed to a bad run of seals installed in new saws. I expect to see a similar responce regarding 361 oil pumps in the future.

My 361 puts out just over halv a tank for every thank of fuel, and with the oiliomatic system that is enough.

I never considered the output a problem, but it might be with "offbrand" bars and chain.......

So, Im using now half the oil to one tank of gas - your telling me thats normal ? Im just concerned about the bar heating-up and hearing the "wine" of the chain as in goes around the bar. I checked the paint on the bar, and nothing has come off.

It's fine then... so long as you are using Stihl chains. They are part of system that oils, and have a groove to carry the oil to the rivets.

It's probably O.K. without stihl chains also, but...
