amen mark.
only way it could be worse is if it was a black locust!!!!!!

geter down.

tom,
How much bar can a 460 reasonably handle?

a muff mod 460 can handle a 28" full comp chain all day in hardwoods and can be used to cut trees w/ bases up to 4' handily. i keep a 24" full comp on a 460 and a 28" on the 066 for the bigger stuff. the 066 is probably 30% faster than the 460 and many times speed of the cut is important. much more important in logging than takedowns. the 460 is tip heavy w/ the 28, balances and performs superbly w/ the 24. 066 balances and performs the better if the 28" is required. the 460 gets the nod 90% of the time here (bout 3lbs lighter also). if i could only have 1 saw it would be the 460.

with all that said: if i just had to have a bar longer than 24/25" i would opt for the 066. if a 24" wil cover 95% of use then i would opt for the 460. your choice of course.

Damn, all these posts on bar length without the real question...R U cuttin softwood or hardwood? My old 064 can run all of a 36" bar in cedar...All the differance in the world, as it applies to how much wood a chainsaw will pull.

Good reply Polefarmer, but he doesn't even know, let alone gotten to acually see in person, the tree he is cutting down. So, yes, all of this theorizing does indeeed seem useless, but it's entertaining none the less.

For the sake of this thread, let's assume my question is for hardwood. That's what I come across primarily, and if it'll work in hardwood, it'll zip through softwood.
