MS170 Non-adjustable Carb Blues

I folded open the front cover and removed the baffles. Drilled out opening behind the outlet cover. It is a little loud now. May want to try leaving baffles and try just opening the outlet.

Not sure I understand. Did you completely cut away the baffles on the cover plate and also open up the rectangular area that has the holes in it on the front side of the muffler? I was thinking more along the lines of drilling larger holes to increase air flow and prying the baffles open a bit more. I'll just play it by ear (so to speak).

I removed everything inside muffler and opened area behind cover plate and opened it up some. Basically a can with a outlet.
That's the way my 036 came from fractory before EPA.

I haven't looked that closely at the muffler, but it seems like mine was crimped shut so the two halves couldn't be separated.

Yes mine too took some heat and opened can.
Be careful it will make it a lot louder.
If I was to do it over I would just open up behind outlet and try that first.

Drilled out wt215 impulse port for MS170, blocked other port, mounted carb, drilled adjustment holes in plastic (see pictures), blocked Intellicarb port, did conservative muffler mod and ran test. Started OK, idle adjusted fine, high rpm still giving me problems with flat spot in acceleration that I can't adjust out - I'm still on the steep part of the carb adjustment learning curve. After running at high and low rpm for about 15 minutes, it stopped and refused to start hot. After letting it cool it would hit after a couple of pulls at full choke, then at half throttle it would start but only run for about a second. Unscrewing the fuel cap and trying again didn't help. I'm going to leave it to tomorrow for another attempt. Any suggestions as to where to start looking for problems?

I've owned several of the 170 and 180 saws and never did care for them. I chose to spend a little less money and buy a couple of 026 saws.

The 026's are a lot more saw than the 170's. On Ebay 026's go for significantly more than 170's. I'd buy them too if I could find them for that kind of price. As fate would have it, I gave it another go tonight and it started right up. Idled steady, no problems at moderate rpm. Drained the fuel, ran it dry and put it on the "finished, cut some wood with it" shelf. Go figure.

If you look around you can find 026s pretty cheap. I paid $10 for the last one, an 026 Pro. You get lucky sometimes.

I didn't say I sold them for that price....Besides that I usually have to add a few dollars and some labor to get the saw back in usable shape. For the $10 I wouldn't get a perfect saw, just something to start with..So far I have $75 in it and some labor but I did pay $10 initially..
If you live in Bloomington you're pretty close to where they have the annual auction of small engine things. I went up there one year and bought about a dozen chainsaws @ $8 apiece and several parts. I think I only have one of the saws left and that's just because I kinda liked it. The rest of them were Huskys and stuff like that..

Yeah, I know but kinda like to play along. So I assume you go to the annual auction? I tried buying some of their parts saws but they wouldn't budge. I told him that he'd make more from me than the auction but he didn't seem to care. The last auction I was kinda busy so didn't go. Looked like he had some saws too. I only bought one at Harringtons auction, a Dolmar top handle for $6, guess everybody missed that one..
Every auction I go to it seems like there's someone there that has more money than brains and you can hardly bid on anything without them overbidding you. That's how it was at Harrington's.

Blocked off intake manifold and exhaust port and took pressure and vacuum readings through spark plug hole - held 7 in. vac. and 7psi steady. That carb just "ain't right" and there's nothing more I can do for it. It will be replaced with an adjustable carb.

Huztl.com has one for $6 plus shipping. I used a wt-215 clone, but modifications are required as described in the above post.

Huztl may have them but I wouldn't order anything Chinese right now. I tried a few weeks ago but never got anything but my money back...Seems like their shipping is a problem along with some factories not working..

I'm still waiting on parts that were guaranteed to be delivered to me two days ago. My Huztl stuff is now forgotten, they sent me my money back. US shipping isn't much better than ordering from China though...Everybody uses the virus as an excuse, don't know if it really is the reason or not..

The MS170/180 carb off eBay was a bust. Wouldn’t respond to normal L & H mixture adjustment.

Left bad feedback and moved on.
