Hi everyone,

Been lurking on the site for some time and have really enjoyed all of the info. My father is an arborist by trade and working on chainsaws was my "gateway drug" into eventually becoming an aircraft mechanic. Picked up a lot of 12 stihl saws recently (all in various states of disrepair) from a guy who's father had a small engine repair shop and rekindled the love affair with rebuilding saws. This is my first post and I largely wanted to share how I modded my muffler on an ms270c and mainly direct folks on things I would have changed. All the ideas on the mod came from this site (other than my bone head mistakes) and other folks who were gracious enough to take their time to generate future inspiration. For this I say thank you and wanted to give a little back.

Due to the lack of space on the ms270c I went with the "14mm pipe" method others have successfully implemented. I found an old tube of 4130 chromoly laying around from an old experimental aircraft project and cut it on a bias on a bandsaw. Then mocked it up and traced the profile of the tube onto the thread corner of the muffler with the muffler removed. First mistake. Since I started by removing the muffler and mocked everything up on the bench and eyeballing on the saw it caused interference later on. I then traced the tube onto the muffler (a little to hi)and punched several holes in the upper RH corner with a small drill bit. Then cleaned them up with a carbide burr. Welded on the tube with a 110v Lincoln mig welder and mounted on the saw and went Doh! I expected to have to trim the pull cord cover but did expect to have to relief the chain break handle. However as I mounted the tube a tad high I did have to relief a small amount of webbing in the corner of the chain brake handle.

Thanks for sharing (like a rehab meeting). We all learn by trial and error at times. But the mods you made to the top cover look good with the sweep you put on it. How's the response to the saw now. I assumed you re-tuned the carb. Good job. I need to get myself into small welding to start anything like that.
