Hi, tearing down an ms291 needs rings and probably piston. Need to check out the cylinder. I searched but couldn't find any rebuild videos. I have done a bunch of 250's, 290's, etc but never a 291. I appreciate any help. Thanks

The ms271 is the same saw, I have been planning on doing a video.
The saw is a pain at first.

Yeah I always say I'm not a fan of the xx1 series saws. I'll just look at it as a learning opportunity. If the cylinder is screwed up I'll just sell the parts. I don't think there is any good option for the cylinder other than oem.

I just finished a 271 yesterday, and as Harley mentioned it took some thought to take the tank and rear handle off and on. I found it similar to work on as the 251, with some minor differences. As I mentioned in a previous post, there were no aftermarket cylinders available that I could find, and the OEM was over $300 for piston and cylinder. I lucked out in that the cylinder was good, and just needed a piston, which is the same as the 261.

Yeah got it apart. The cylinder can be saved, just got it out of the ultrasonic tank. Still needs a little cleanup/polishing. Ordered a new piston kit. Thanks

The sprocket bearing and bar nuts are pretty much what all the ms290 shares in common with it.
Yes, I said "many parts". I did not say all parts. Heck, HarleyT, lots of machine screws and a bunch of other hardware items match up. But, it is rather amazing how much was changed. The 029 and 290 have much more in common. The 291 is cut from a different cloth from the 290. I bought three major parts in December from a Stihl dealer for a 291. He sold me 290 parts but none would fit Needless to say, he was embarrassed after I brought them all back.

I cannot think of one thing that interchanges, maybe the fuel filter and plug. The ms271 and ms291 are almost identical, except for the piston size.

Yeah it sucks when your used to 0 series saws. It took me awhile to get the cylinder off but I did. I'm going to cleanup the cylinder and put in a new piston and rings. Glad of that, getting the cylinder sounds like OEM is about the only thing available. I don't mind OEM but the cylinder sounds expensive from what I've read.
