I'm with you, I've never waterproofed my chaps with the new style. I've never even seen anybody do it that has attempted to put the cap on. Seems pretty simple to me: put the cap in the hole, twist until it sits in the proper spot, twist to seat the O-ring, give a little tug to make sure it's good, and flip the handle down. I can't say I like them any more or less than the old style. In the Forest Service, I see the new ones last longer because knuckleheads tend to think that the slot in the old style cap is for tightening, so the seal goes bad more quickly and the slot gets chewed up to the point of non-functionality. Not a problem with the new ones.
