On most of the pictures I've seen of saws with muffler work done they've had extensions welded where they've been drilled. Is this always necessary? Since I don't have a welder I figured I'd just leave the bare holes and be done with it. The saw in question is a 029 Super.

Thanks
Thomas

Go to walkerssawshop.com. I'm not very good w/ stuff like this so I ordered an already modified muffler from Walkers Saw Shop. They are in Canada so when he tells you $75.00, remember it's Canadian dollars. I think I paid about $35 or $40 U.S. smackers for a brand new modified muffler. If you're patient you can send them your stock one to modify and that'll save you. It made a noticeable difference in power and it sounds meaner too! ! !:D

For the sake of the cheap, do-it-yourselfer, could this mod (removing the baffles and matching the exhaust port sizes) be an improvement to any saw?

Performance wise you don't need these little pipes, depending on design they could do as much harm as good.

Most often they are just to direct exaust gas from melting plastic parts and blowing directly or indirectly off the log/tree into you face.

To screen or not to screen

I keep checking back for a positive answer either way on this question. You see those pipes sticking out, but I do not think there are screen inside there at least for what I can get fed back to me. I too tried a little do it yerself project and wanted to know if the scren was absolutely needed or not. I dont have the spark issue catching things on fire, it is pretty wet where I am and I do most cutting in the winter. Someone actually posted saying the screen would cut the flow down by 30%, so your hole needs to be even bigger to compensate for that. I just left it off, My total hole space is 125% of the exhaust port (by guestimation) and I have not had any trouble. I still take a minute to check inside there once in awhile to see if I find any dust being sucked back in, but nothing so far.

for years, i ran my 066, and just recently pulled the muffler to slap on my walkerized dual port..the screens in the stock muffler were fine and untouched by carbon and gunk, no flaky carbon inside or trapped anywhere....so now that my duals have no screens, i'm gonna leave them out......i never run my saws too rich , always use the stihl bottle to the 2 1/2 gallons and try my best to keep her runnin smoothly....i've used others' saws without arrestors and never seen a single spark...i'd just like to hear hands on advice from others who don't run a screen in their saws............................... guff

Stihl Dual port 066 mufler

Steve here...
I just ordered a Factory dual port muffler complete...From Madsens. It has the 5/8 side port plus small slit and the long front port on the cover, both with screens. The inner baffle needs to be opened up and thats it. #1122 140 0603 they sell complete for $72.86. I'll post pics before and after of the baffle mods tonight.
