On the 260 remove material from the raised portion where the exhaust outlet is. I removed the external deflector and milled oput the shiel so the exhaust is directed straight out.
On the 440 you can either by the magnum front cover or you can hig out the existing exhaust outlet.

and another thing...when i removed the muffler from my 260...the bottom right hand hole just wasn't tapped, but it looked as if it were accidently ""countersunk??"" and there were only threads on the bottom half of the hole!! i don't know how many are supposed to look like that or even if they're supposed to, but i really need to know if anyone else has seen this...this is a new saw, could it have been a screw up at the factory??? i wish i had a digital cam...this really troubles me until i get some good feedback, help me out guys, it really bothers me. guff

There is not suposed to be anthing inside the 260 anyway, I have not taken apart a muffler on an 046 so I don't know about that. If you look at an 066 muffler though there is a metal box in the center of the muffler that requires some modification.

Are you talking about the the treads in the block where the front half is bolted through the back half and to the block?

I checked the thead taps into the block on my saw, they are threaded all the way from top to botom of the holes in the block.

Did you take the time to match up the opening in the rear half of the muffler to the exaust port? Often the factory machiening leaves much to be desired.

I didn't do mine like Ben did his. I left the outer deflector intact but enlarged the hole covered by the spark arresting screen. I removed the screen, cut the hole bigger and replaced the screen.

I agree with TW also. I removed the inner half of the muffler from the cylinder and filed out the sides of the opening so it would match up to the exhaust port. I used a razor knife to trim back the gasket.

yeah timberwolf..if you were to look at the saw as if you were looking at the muffler from the front...remove the muffler, and the bolt on the bottom right, once removed you would see a hole approximately a quarter of an inch around, and deep...at the bottom of this hole is a smaller hole which the bolt enters, it only has a threadcount of 4...un freekinbelievable....but it's a new saw...looks like someone made the hole off center , then reemed it all down with a bigger drill, then put the hole where it should be...a small hole on the inside wall of a bigger hole..just starting and finishing towards the destination of the original...its hard to explain
