Does anyone offer pre-modded mufflers for sale?
I am thinking about doing the muffler on my MS460
How much could I expect to pay for one?
Thanks

You can get a factory dual port muffler part #1128 140 0801 about $30. This is what a lot of people are doing. Be sure to richen it up. You can also do a search for muffler mods.

I recently added the dual port cover to my newer 046. I checked the factory carb adjustment with a tach and it is at 12900 rpm's. I didn't need to remove the limiter caps.

i have a 440 in need of a dual port mod. does the 440 use the same dual port muffler as the 460? if not does anyone know the # for the 440?

also, is it the front cover (mentioned in #3) that is replaced or the main body. the main body already has one factory port. i have an 066 that has the dual ports on the rear body near the rim and pics of other mods here show the ports to be near the rim of the rear body opposite the original.

Hi Toolmaker and others... I saw this post and I am in the same boat with the 460 muffler. I was wondering how you made out? Get just the front?
It appears to me the back section needs the hole opened up or another one added. I don't know what majic people are doing inside.
I think I am going to open the hole and maybe add another one on the opposite side. If it runs better I'll weld a deflector to it. But I.m still uncertain of the inards. Any help with what's inside and how you made out would be appreciated... woojr

I think Dean at Washington Hotsaws will add another port to your muffler for around $28. Put a ported faceplate on your muffler and have three ports. I think it will be relatively close to around a %10+ gain in HP. I have three ports on all my saws and not only do they run great they sound bad too.

I put the dual port on my 44/46's and then open the stock hole on the back half and the dual port itself. It looks really clean, keeps each hole covered with a spark arrestor (in timber it's a necessary evil) and each one opened judiciously gives me plenty of airflow. A Dremel is a wonderful thing.

Can anyone give me a part# for the 066 dual-port muffler cover. Seems my dealer can't seem to find it or even know what I'm talking about..

That should tell you something about your dealer. Of course I see you're from South Dakota, but still, he should know the basic steps in reading a parts cataloge or microfisce.
I'm not a parts dealer, but I think you look up the model saw, then you identify the saw vintage by the serial number, then you look up the part, then you choose which listed part will work best.
All you need to do is look at an older saw, and find the cover with a seperate screen and a long slot on the cover. Newer models have a solid cover.
Ask Rich Hoffman (sponser here), he must have a handfull of modified covers for the 44/46/66.

I called the local dealer (been sellin' em for 30? years... told me I'd have to come in and look at the book and point out what I want... then quoted $75 for what he thinks I want (that's ordered).
I just added a hole next to the other hole and heading out to try it... I think I'm going to nibble away at it little at a time and get a sense of how much richer it seems to want to be.
Looking for a shotgun barrel to put on it... that's quite a touch... also looking at some other unique pipe ideas... woojr

I rent a room in my house to a logger. The dealer he uses actually questioned him as to why he would want a dual port cover. The dealer told him "they don't give any extra horsepower:dizzy: , and they actually hurt performance:dizzy:"

Said logger was really convinced of this when he tried some of my dual ported saw's. :hmm3grin2orange:

Hey Hired Gun,thats the stigma I am dealing with here!!!My dealer, local loggers and tree guys dont believe. So I invite some players in the business to my house for a gtg.Boy,you should hear the naysayers excuses about why they can't show up.Show me don't tell me.jeff

066 Dual port muffler

Andy, Mike, Woojr, Thanks for the part #. Woojr seem like you know what I'm talking about with dealing with a dealer soomtimes. Our closest one is our local hardware man (Ace) . I've also made the mod you've made and it has helped. I just wanted to keep every thing clean and neat. I'll check the sponsor I buy a lot of aftermarket items and equipment where I can find what I want. Most of the time it's not local. Thanks again!!!

woojr,
half inch conduit can be used for pipe. i cut it off at about a 30* angle, elongate the original hole, toward the front, to bout 3/4" length, and add a matching 3/8x3/4" hole on the opposite side. the pipes wil be bout 2" total length, maybe 2.5. the muff metal is pretty tough for a muff. use 3/16 drill bit to drill series of holes then smooth w/ die grinder i wire weld the joints then smooth things out w/ jb weld. the area where the pipe lays against, or close to, the front rim of the muff needs to b filled w/ the jb. or i guess one could keep the angle around 45* and weld completely around the joint. probably spot weld in 4 places then finish w/ the jb would b sufficient. anyhow, my weld is not the prettiest so i grind it smooth and use the jb for filler. the jb alone wil not hold them on (dont ask me how i know this). . keep the amps low when welding.

Well I must report that simply adding a second hole and a slightly richer high speed needle setting produced noticeable results today. I had significantly fewer chain bindings today. Very few. What I did note, was how the engine seemed leaner as the tank went down and as the work got longer. It was a nice day, high 40's here.
I hate to say it, but I think the dealers are fed a canned line and for many its easier to go along with the company line. You know they do a good job of keeping their prices up and their products off the net and mail order competition. No accident Huskies appear cheaper, you can buy em all over the place.
All in all I am looking forward to removing the little "taint" strip between the two holes and trying it again. Hopefully if my back is up to it, tomorrow looks like a nice day. Only have about two more truckloads left to get anyway... woojr
