A lot of mulches are died different colors, regardless of what type of wood they are. I think those are the mulches Kate is refering to.

Update on mulch installation

Installed the mulch today. Let me know what you think. I ended up paying $90 for over 7yds so I came out better than expected. Here's some before pics.

I've never heard of this before. Is this to beautify the ground area or does it benefit the tree? Just learning, so if it's kinda a dumb question, forgive my ignorance. Thanks....

It's to benefit the tree and it looks like he's doing a great job. No more hitting those surface roots with the mower......and at the same time creating a great place for tree roots to grow too. Large beds around trees are great places to recycle leaves, grass clippings and other organic yard waste right on site and have large benefits for the trees.

How do you bid something like that? I realize you have to cover the material, but how many men to do the job-how many man hours? What is the technical name for what he is doing? Root protection? So the organic yard waste serves two purposes, first to protect the roots, second to slowly feed the tree, correct?

I worked by myself on this job. I billed for the material, 4hrs labor at $25hr and $100 for delivery and travel time. I own the dump truck so I made money on the delivery as well. It took me 4hrs to install, but remember, I could back right up up it and dump. I have another tree in the back yard that I will have to transfer material to from the front.

Customer called yesterday and wants some of the mulch removed. Not enough grass she says. I told her that there was no grass there anyway, she says she still wants it moved. Okay, I said, but it won't be free. Some people...

Try to get her to do perennial or shrub plantings in there.

Is round up such a good idea around the base of the tree? It's really not necessary anyway since the grass is not growing under the tree.

A high dose of sulpher fert would be better, burn the grass and give the tree some nutrients.

husky, I thought that the more it was shredded, the finer and more moisture-retentive mulch is.

Guy, actually fine ground mulch locks the surface and becomes hydrophobic.

I've pulled mulchbeds up for clients durring pooring rains to show them the dry soil underneath.

1/3 rule...

Yes it is a design ROT, but it is based human aesthetic perceptions. Just as planting in 3's and 5's will look more pleasing to the average eye then even numbers.
