Tom Dunlap posted about using them several years ago. His reason was for dead or rotten branches in case they broke. It was one of the best tips I've learned here.
 
I've only ever used 2, guess it never crossed my mind to try that. Anybody else use this technique?

The purpose of the marl/halfhitch is a backed up knot. The running bo'lin actually is backing up the hitch. The only reason I can see for three or more hitches on sound wood is either you do not trust the placement of the knots, or it is the way you were taught, and hence have always done it.
