Thanks for the advice already given on this saw. It's all working fantastic ... starting second pull ... singing away at full reves etc., but I have a couple more simple questions.

I have done as suggested and changed the spur for a rim sprocket.

First, the manual says "fit the rim sprocket with chip ejection cavities facing outwards". As far as I can see it is totally symmetrical except the there is writing on one side. I have fitted it with the writing facing out. OK?

I see now why it is so much more expensive to change a spur sprocket. Why are the saws sold with a spur sprocket?

The rim sprocket comes with a retaining washer which I have fitted concave face out. I am 99.9% certain that this is correct but just thought I would ask?

Also, I am 99.99% certain that the rim sprocket is supposed to move a few eighths up and down on the shaft, but I just thought I would check incase I have been supplied with the wrong kit.

Thanks in advance.

Everything sounds fine to me. The concave side of the washer does go out, and the rim will slide up and down (or in and out, depending on how the saw is sitting) on the splined shaft. It's supposed to "float" like that.

And I would imagine that spurs are made and sold because they're cheaper to make, have higher tolerances, and cost more to replace.

"Chip ejection slots" were machined into Stihl brand rims at one time. They no longer machine the slots but there is tons of old documentation out there that makes mention of them.
